Other pictures on the web show people flat on their back with their laptop or iPad higher than their head. While recovering from a back problem, this described me and my need. Set-up took only a couple of minutes and all seemed perfectly balanced.
After a period of intense email reading, I probably shifted my weight without realizing it and then "BAM," my laptop toppled over and smacked my face so hard, I was left with a nasty gash between my eyebrows that required medical attention. (In retrospect, I realize I instinctively raised my hand to steady the stand while the laptop was free to fall and land on my face.)
So either chained cable-ties or Velcro of some sort may be needed to prevent this type of injury if you need to use this while flat on your back.
Some other observations: First, the tray is well designed with a smaller "lip" on one side and a larger lip on the reverse. This allows for different laptop designs to be accommodated. At least one frustrated reviewer appeared not to have figured this out. I have now successfully used this with multiple laptops and my iPad.
Second, the holes in the tray allow for heat dissipation.
Third, the joints are easily adjusted. Patience may be required for the first use as one experiments to find the angles that work best for them.
Lastly, don't fall asleep or fail to pay attention if using this while flat on your back. I'm now going to work on better affixing my laptop to the tray.
The bottom two leg segments are associated with the seat cushion (as in the picture), the tray segment lifts the tray above my thighs. The tray segment and tray will be forward of vertical, away from the body; the picture, though, (tray part) is back of vertical, towards the body. My "joint" settings are provided at the end. I recommend you set the tray up on the floor, then fine tune it sitting in your chair. (To keep things orientated in your mind, it's helpful to remember the top of the tray has the lip, the bottom is flat).
Put the unit on the floor, all segments in a straight line , last two JOINT SETTINGs 180 (tray lip just up out of the way). When you do one leg, mirror image the other before starting another joint. Start with middle joint, then end, then finally the tray joint.
Before going to your chair for fine tuning, lay the tray flat on floor, legs up, to make sure it's symmetrical. It's easier to adjust the big things when it's not in your lap while you're sitting down. When sitting think ahead, "What do I want this segment to do" then make that adjustment to both sides, before moving on. Another tip is to remember this tray is made for a generic human anywhere on the planet. Innovate if the tray doesn't meet your needs. I didn't like the way my laptop was sitting on the tray. I looked around for sumpthin' that might help. I spotted an old chopping block that years ago separated down a glued joint down the center. The chopping block part is a couple of inches longer than a business envelope, and 1/4" thick. I looked around for my NON-SKID RUBBERIZED FABRIC. Wrapped that around the wood, cut it off, held it in place with a rubber band, put it at the back of the tray under the monitor. The front of the PC now hangs over the lip; I turn it a little bit for easy typing. A lot more comfortable. Doesn't slide around. GOOGLE the words I wrote (Non-skid...). Scroll down a bit. There's a picture in the center. Also a link to eBay. I think I got mine at a fabric shop back in the 90s. Try a couple of local fabric shops, or eBay.
MIDDLE JOINT: -135: END JOINT: -175; TRAY JOINT: +45
Pros:
- Inexpensive
- Very adjustable
- Probably practical for other applications (in bed, some other reviews mention)
- Good way to try the standing desk experience without breaking the bank
- Seems sturdy, never worried about knocking it down/over
- Holds laptop securely
Cons:
- A bit wobbly extended this far if I don't have a body part in contact with the desk damping its vibrations (see below)
I can't speak to durability yet, though I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be durable. Seems to have quality construction.
In terms wobbly/vibration -- I'm a very fast touch typist. What I find is that if I am typing rapidly on it and no part of my body or hands is touching the desk aside from my fingers, it wobbles a bit more than I would like. Not dangerously so (in fact I never have any concern about it toppling) but enough to be annoying and slightly disruptive to my view of the screen. However, my wrists naturally seem to contact the front edge of the wrist support/restraint bumper that keeps the laptop from falling off the front, so as long as I let them do so, this dampens out the vibration to an extremely acceptable level. Still, it's a bit annoying. I suspect an additional cross-brace would do the trick; if I were designing it I'd probably try to design a snap-on cross brace which would reduce vibration. (Perhaps I'll play with using a bungee cord or something and see if this helps).
Anyway, all told I'm very happy. And I switch back and forth between sitting and standing in about 1 hr increments now, all day.

However, I actually bought this not for it's intended use. I have some repetitive stress issues with my hands and wanted a lowered, tilted keyboard stand that doesn't have to be attached to the desk and is relatively light and portable (in the sense of easy to throw in the car - this would be tight for a carry-on suitcase). I'm about 5'3" and when fully extended this works really well with a low enough chair. Just two points of caution: (1) It's just a bit wobbly when fully extended, but I won't take off stars for that as it's not really intended to be used at it's full height; and (2) the measurements given are accurate, so make sure you know how much height you need - I think this would not work for a taller person / higher chair.
