Joining the author on these exploratory journeys, psychological and cultural, is rewarding. Rowyn is like the best tour guide you can imagine, who knows the local gossip as well as the deep history of the places we are exploring at her side.
This collection is best read after the novel A Rational Arrangement, concerning as it does characters in that story. Two of the stories are about the human cast and describe illuminating backstory and heart-warming future developments for the main characters of that book; the third is a fascinating look into greatcat culture. They're all very deftly written, and long enough to deal with their conflicts while not overextending their welcome.
I have many author acquaintances and while I care about them as people I'm not necessarily the audience for their work. Rowyn is one of the few whose stories I not only enjoy, I actually sign up to proofread for the sole purpose of reading them as fast as they're written. Given the busyness of my schedule, that should tell you all you need to know about the quality of her storytelling.
Pick this collection up, and its companion novel if you haven't read it yet. You'll be glad.
My favorite story in this collection is “A Regular Hero” because of how well it highlights Rowyn’s crafting of the greatcat culture. Ansther and Callie’s happily ever after was a satisfying read, and the tale itself also shows the greatcats as sentient beings with goals and lives entirely separate from the humans in this world.
I also appreciated “Inconceivable” for the heavy topics it tackles, such as fertility and childhood trauma. No spoilers, but the ending is sheer perfection. Overall, this collection is a worthwhile read for those who thoroughly loved A Rational Arrangement.
His Angel: 2.5 / 5 (Meh) -- Justin's far from his finest hour in his early interactions with young Nikola. No man should be so relieved to find that, even under provocative conditions, he will not, in fact, actually commit rape. Nikola is simply awfully young to me.
A Regular Hero: 3.5 / 5 (Good) -- The greatcats Anthser and Callie's story (concurrent with the full-length novel) is enjoyable, especially when seeing humans from the greatcat perspective, and learning more about their culture pastimes and organizations. However, disregard their species and it's a fairly typical conflict-of-careers short romance.
Inconceivable: 4.25 (Very good) -- Wisteria & Nikola's frank openheartedness is finally met by some emotional revelations about Justin's own past, truths buried beneath his confident façade. Once again you have to be okay with MFM and FMM activities, as well as MF and MM, but the story is about strengthening relationships with hope, healing, and love, not just lust.
Rowyn provides some additional depth to our main character's relationship, as well as a fun side story of "kitty love" for Nik's feline companion. The last story manages to resolve some hanging issues in the relationship and explain some of the backstory.
A nice coda for a wonderful romance.
My purrsonal favorite was, of course, A Regular Hero which features a m/f romance between... greatcats! Who are indeed great, being the best parts of cats and humans and big enough to be ridden.
