Editorial Reviews
Everything But The Girl return after a 24-year hiatus with their new album, Fuse. Written and produced by Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn in 2021, Fuse is a modern take on the lustrous electronic soul they first pioneered in the mid-90s. Thorn's affecting, richly textured voice is once again up front in Watt's glimmering landscape of sub-bass, sharp beats, half-lit synths and empty space. The result is the sound of a band comfortable with being both sonically contemporary, yet agelessly themselves.

But Everything But The Girl have been a part of my DNA since I was 18, so don't listen to me. I mean, there's no way I *wasn't* going to like this record. But here's the rub: it's not just me. The reviews have been unanimously, overwhelmingly gushing and positive. Jaded music critics all over the world are in LOVE with this record. Even some of the fussiest hardcore EBTG fans are over the moon. And so, I suspect, will you be if you give it a shot.
Thank you Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt for delivering not just something that I love, but also something that the world may be desperately in need of right now: an excellent record that rewards more and more with each new listen.
I liked "Apron Strings" but not enough to buy an Everything but the Girl album. Flashforward to 1995 and the Todd Terry remix of 1994's "Missing" from "Amplified Heart", the duo's seventh album of original studio material. I liked the remix quite a bit and ended up buying "The Best Of" in 1996, and for many years that was all I owned.
When I saw the duo was coming back with "Fuse" I decided to buy up all of their catalogue and listen to it from beginning to end before writing up this review. I unwittingly purchased "A Talk About" not realizing it was going to be a 1990 interview with Ben Watt. It was a very interesting interview because of the time it was done--they had not hit their ceiling yet with "Missing" which was still five years away.
I liked "Fuse", and the duo did the smartest thing--10 songs in under 40 minutes--perfect, they get one star for doing things right, get in, get out. Unlike 1999's "Temperamental" which drones on way, way too long and sounds like Ben Watt found a new toy with knob twiddling and drum patches on the machine. I much prefer 1996's similar outing, "Walking Wounded". I mention these two albums because "Fuse" is a cousin of them. Absent are the jazzy soul noodlings of 1988's "Idlewild" and 1990's "The Language of Life". Also absent are the acoustic folk leanings of 1991's "Worldwide" and 1994's "Amplified Heart". Also absent is the duo's early Smiths' tributes found on 1984's "Eden" and 1985's "Love Not Money".
This is to say that "Fuse" finds the duo comfortable in their skin, writing minimalist lyrics set against some catchy hooks encased in indietronica. I found the album suitable for listening with many songs having a reflective somber mood. All in all, not a bad return.
Why now, though? Why did 24 years pass before this? What made the duo decide to halt their solo careers from the past 20 years and do another Everything but the Girl album? Who knows. Likewise, will they do more albums together, Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn? I also have all of Tracey's solo albums as I prefer her vocals over Ben's (though he has a few songs over the years that I liked him singing on).
Here's how "Fuse" compares to other Everything but the Girl releases:
1984 Eden: Two Stars
1985 Love Not Money: Two and a Half Stars
1986 Baby, the Stars Shine Bright: Three Stars
1988 Idlewild: Four Stars
1990 The Language of Life: Four Stars
1991 Worldwide: Four Stars
1994 Amplified Heart: Four Stars
1996 Walking Wounded: Five Stars
1999 Temperamental: Three Stars
2023 Fuse: Four Stars

First heard their music whilst on holiday...
Been a fan ever since! X
