RUBBING ALCOHOL 90%. You must load up a paper towel with alcohol to de-oil your fingers & the surface you are applying the tape to & the two sides of the tape. Then it works just like you would expect. Expect to — with difficulty — stretch the tape to twice its original length. So far this makes an excellent repair or preventative reinforcement for daily use cables.
For ten years I have been applying various ‘repairs and patches’ to an endless string of patch/power/data cables where the designed strain-relief has failed to take the strain. If you add audio and wall outlet power cables and cords to this — I have been working at this for more than 55 years.
The oil and fat in our diet and on our skin breaks down every cable cover I know of except neoprene and urethane.
Wiping PVC cable jackets with WD40 or kerosene rejuvenates PVC — also works in cars and with soft-top convertibles. This happens by restoring the flex lost to sun and weather. It also displaces organic fats that harden or weaken most plastics. I am still working on silicone as it applies to things like the rubber that protects your smartphone or tablet. Folks with really dry skin or who use no moisturizers will have no idea what I am talking about. At 65 I still have really oily skin except of my face — that eats the charge/data cable on my phone and causes the silicone on my phone protector to stretch out and distort.
