About the Author

Dudley Slater learned firsthand how to inspire and lead people. As the co-founder and fifteen-year CEO of Integra Telecom, he grew the company from nine to over two thousand employees, transitioning it from a start-up to national prominence as one of the ten largest fiber-based telecommunications companies in the United States. He attributes his company's success to its people. Slater partnered with other leaders of iconic, nationally recognized organizations, to refine the knowledge and techniques that make up the practical, everyday tenets of the fusion leadership.
Beyond his experience as an entrepreneur and author, Slater has served as president of three nationally recognized companies, an independent director on the boards of numerous private and public companies, and was appointed by the governor in his home state to serve on Oregon's Innovation Council. Slater earned a bachelor of science in geophysics from UCLA and a master in business administration from the Harvard Business School.
Slater has two beautiful, grown children (Toryn and Kathrina) and lives with his wife of 29 years, Laurie, in Portland, Oregon and New York, New York.

Steven T. Taylor is an award-winning journalist and writer who's had more than 750 articles, editorials, essays, and other works published by more than 60 organizations and publications, including The Nation, The Washington Post, Public Citizen, The New York Times best-selling history book Chronicle of the 20th Century and CBS Radio. He's a recipient of the Washington Press Foundation Award and several journalism grants from various organizations, including The Center for Public Integrity, Voice of the Environment, and The National Forest Accountability Alliance. Steve writes monthly articles for a national legal publication called Of Counsel. A professor at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, he teaches nonfiction writing and public presentation.

In Fusion Leadership, Dudley Slater has crafted an inspirational and revealing guide for any leader looking to achieve extraordinary results by maximizing the potential of their teams. It highlights the importance of an engaged workforce, but unlike many other business and leadership books, Slater doesn’t outline a ten-step path for leadership, rather, he lets other leaders share their personal journeys – both the successes and failures, their weaknesses and strengths - through powerful storytelling.

Slater highlights how an engaged workforce can only occur when employees at all levels of an organization feel they are contributing toward a common goal, are recognized for their performance and feel they have a path toward personal and career fulfillment.

Through anecdotes and personal insights, Slater defines what others may have seen or been a part of but couldn’t quite describe. Fusion Leadership serves as a nice complement to Liz Wiseman’s Multipliers. Both books serve to instruct and inspire leaders by showing them how genuinely respecting employees and their work translates to productivity and fulfillment.

As I work with clients to help them operationalize their brand and transform their business, the discussion always begins with culture and culture is fostered by the organization’s leaders. The tenants of Fusion Leadership and the movement it has started is working throughout organizations and Slater presents the material to back it up. It’s a must read for all leaders at every level of an organization because it strikes at the heart of what leaders and their teams yearn for – respect and purpose.

Fusion Leadership successfully combines practical advice and inspiration. On the practical side, it discusses eight specific leadership subtopics each using an example of a different company, situation and a leader. This creates an industry-neutral context that is relatable to a wide audience and engaging to read.

Author skillfully augments facts with a message that companies can reach a whole new level of success if the culture is more than just ‘coin-operated’. By creating an environment where people come to work for a cause, we give a gift to ourselves and to our employees and this gift can magnify organization’s ability to deliver shareholder value. Fusion communicates this message pragmatically and with great actionable examples.

The strategies described in the book are proven to work. Being in the same industry as the author, my company employs several people who worked for Integra and fondly remember it as a hi-lite of their careers. Fusion Leadership re-energized me a as CEO and I will re-read it frequently as my company continues to grow.

This is one of those books that is interesting, practical and applicable as each chapter contains an in-depth interview with some notable CEO or organizational founder, from Levi Strauss to Horizon Air. I especially loved the Chapter, "Who is Going To Kick Ass - And How? Even after decades of leadership experience, I learned things that will provide invaluable assistance to me in the future.
