This is a review for the QUEEN size futon.
-This a very comfortable floor futon. You will be on the floor. It's also a futon. Don't buy this expecting it to be something that it's not, or you will be disappointed with your purchase.
-Skip the inflatables, cots, and what-nots. You don't have to worry about pumps and punctures. Inflatable mattresses get all wonky after use and you have to set them up.
-I highly recommend this product for ANY usage. Everyday sleeping, lounging while you watch movies, when you have visitors over, soft play area for kids, college, car camping. You can also bring it over to other people's houses if they don't have somewhere for you to sleep when you visit.
-Queen can fit two people
-Easy to store and transport. Just roll it up and bam! done. You can carry it alone.
-I tested my futon on carpet and on hard floors. It's just as comfortable either way.
-Can be more hygienic than beds.
-It's really affordable and you will have it for a long time
-Japanese futons are good for your back.
-I used this primarily for my college years when I moved away from home and couldn't afford a mattress. My sister was studying abroad in Japan at the time and she was using a floor futon like some Japanese people do. That is how I got the idea to purchase this floor futon.
-I love this product and I stand by it. It has served me well for over 4 years.
-It's unconventional in the western world. My sister lived in Japan for 3 years and I lived in Korea for 3 years. Sleeping on futons can be a common occurrence in the eastern region. I say this because when I would have friends over in college, some couldn't believe that I was sleeping on a futon and thought I was uncomfortable. I wasn't. It's just a different way to do things.
-With that said, it's not for everyone.
CONCERNS I HAD BEFORE I MADE MY PURCHASE:
-I didn't think it would be comfortable:
**It's very comfortable and the closest I could get to a real bed at my time of purchase.
-I thought the material inside would be saggy and it would be like sleeping on the floor or a sleeping bag:
**The padding keeps its thickness and doesn't sag at all. It is very supportive and plush.
-I was concerned about the toxic chemical smell some reviewers mentioned:
**My futon did not have a toxic smell. It had a very light woodsy scent due to the cotton. It goes away and you can just air it out if it really bothers you.
-I wanted to have an authentic Japanese floor futon:
**The style is authentic, but they obviously aren't made in Japan or shipped from Japan. This was alright with me because I didn't want to pay an extra $100+ for shipping if I wanted one from Japan.
AFTER 6 MONTHS OF EVERYDAY USE:
-It's still just as comfortable and I fall asleep right away.
-I don't have any complaints and I don't wake up sore
-The smell is completely gone.
4 YEARS LATER:
I left my futon with my sister and her fiancé when I moved abroad after college. They still have it and use it when company comes to visit them in their LA apartment. I'm visiting them this holiday season and will be sleeping on my old college bed like old times!
4.5 YEARS LATER:
I'm now living at my sister's and her fiancées apartment because my boyfriend got deployed. I sleep on this every night now. Still just as fine. No complaints. It doesn't compare to the Serta mattress at my boyfriend's house, but it's well over +$1,000. Anyways, I'm grateful I have something to sleep on and my back feels amazing. I fold it up now to where it's the size of a single bed, but has double the thickness. It's a bit more comfy and saves floor space in my sister's living room this way.
THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND:
-I use a fitted bed sheet on mine to protect the cover.
-I bought mine in black because I thought it would be more durable.
-Air your futon out every so often (about once or twice a month).
-I bought this at 21. I'm 25 now. It's been fine for my age and body type throughout the years.
-It's not for everyone. Keep that in mind. It works for me and other lovers of this futon, but it might not work for you. Do your research on Japanese floor futons or floor futons in general to see if it might be for you
-Haters gonna hate
It's also great for travel! I've brought "my bed" to several over night occasions now! I never have to worry about where I'm going to sleep as long as I have a nice empty bit of floor to roll my Futon out on. I highly recommend this if you're looking for something that can be stored easily.
When I first purchased this item there was a noticeable sort of "grassy" smell to it. I never really minded it and honestly can't remember noticing it past the first week at most. As of this 3 month mark, there is absolutely no smell, but I'm sure it was gone long before that.
As far as comfort goes, this futon is great for a single person sleeping on their back, but anything else may be uncomfortable to a degree. As a 6'4 guy, this futon is long enough to lay down comfortably without falling off one end or the other, but I hadn't realized how narrow it really was before I bought it. If you sleep with your arms sticking out (at all!), or you roll around a lot at night, buy a wider futon. And as far as sleeping on your side goes, this futon can work for it, but it's not great. It's thick enough to pull off short term, but if you have wide shoulders or lack a pillow, do not expect to sleep in this position.
Also I should note that this futon arrives vacuum sealed and expands dramatically upon opening. If you think you may have to return this at some point, expect to re-vacuum seal it or pay for a giant box to ship it. But at only $70, it would make for a decent temporary guest bed for the odd guest or for short-notice trips.
