On the parallel world of Nextdoor, the Filoby Testament predicts the coming of D'ward the Liberator, who is to bring death to Zath, God of Death. The conclusion of the trilogy The Great Game resembles its predecessors, Past Imperative (1995) and Present Tense (1996), in being tightly written, intelligent, and original. Edward Exeter reaches the climax of his quest to be the liberator who will slay Zath, the self-appointed god of death. As often in tales of prophets and heroes, the supporting cast accounts for more than half the story's interest; it includes, among others, the progressively less naive Julian Smedley, the lusty Amazon Ursula Newton, Eleal Singer, and Dommni Houseboy, with his engaging Anglo-Indian speech patterns. Duncan also works out many of the implications of the previous volumes, makes the logistics of a crusade come alive, and draws on what is clearly extensive knowledge of history, folklore, and comparative religion. The Great Game, though not Duncan's most accessible work, may prove to be his most durable. This volume provides a decisive and satisfactory end to it. Roland Green

Future Indefinite has all the classic epic fantasy elements: a sharply detailed world of magic and gods, the struggle between good and evil, an ancient prophecy, a fish-out-of-water protagonist, a small band of adventurers, romance, love, and plenty of action. The book succeeds due to Duncan's use of these familiar elements in unfamiliar ways. Our protagonist is a young British gentleman, barely out of school; his love interest none other than his slightly horse-faced older cousin. The good vs. evil struggle is better classed as a lesser evil vs. a greater. And the prophecy? It's suitably cryptic...but also logical and quite possibly self-fulfilling.

Duncan's system of magic is not only ingenious, but integral to the book's plot. Anyone in their own world is mundane; transported to a new world (even if that world is Earth), they become 'Strangers', and gain 'Charisma', the ability to influence natives. The more people you influence, the more power you gain and the more you can influence them-- a perpetuating cycle. The competition for native followers leads to Machiavellian machinations between the Strangers in a world, some of whose powers rise to godlike levels.

One cannot read this book without drawing plot parallels to a slightly more famous book-- the Bible. Specifically Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus Christ. However, the diffferences are just as significant, and any Christian who considers this book as "mocking" their faith is someone looking for a reason to be insulted.

Future Indefinite is the finale of Duncan's most serious-- and very likely his best-- series to date. Don't miss it.

Not since Game of Thrones have I had such remorse at reaching the end of the series. Fortunately, Dave Duncan isn't as cavalier with his characters as Martin and most of them get through the books. As always, Duncan develops a well fleshed out set of characters, each an individual and not always in sync with the others or the reader. This series touched me the most of all the Duncan books I've read. The moral questions and conflict are compelling and provocative, yet you still race along to see where the story will take you. It was dreadfully difficult to get into the first book, Past Imperative. It took about five chapters before you could begin to see a plot coming together out of all the disparate elements. Hang in there. Your effort is repaid in full. I've started re-reading it

The Great Game - Interesting Fantasy Series

This is an unconventional and imaginative fantasy/parallel world series. Duncan develops a parallel Earth with rather different astronomy, geography, and history. Some forms of magic allow talented individuals to move back and forth from our Earth to the Earth of the Vales, the society next door. The key feature is that strangers, people from our Earth on Valia or Valians in our universe, can acquire substantial magic powers through the accumulation of 'mana' stemming from acts of worship or sacrifice by the natives of that world. On Valia, this results in a society dominated by 'strangers' who have set themselves up as deities. The Great Game series describes a complex challenge to one of these deities in the form of the actions of the Earth born protagonist of this series, an idealistic Edwardian youth. Duncan's parallel universe is constructed well and his writing is solid. In several of his books, he has dealt with issues of duty and sacrifice, and this is no exception. There is a particularly nice use of the confrontation of youthful Edwardian idealism with harsh political realities. The plotting is clever as well, making creative use not only of the magical themes but also of the great influenza pandemic of 1917-18.

This book is the truly excellent conclusion to an original and generally very readable series. The first two books, "Past Imperative" and "Present Tense" are very good though slightly patchy - the plot is uneven enough in places to make them less than compulsive reading, but this book is enough to make the entire series a classic, a must-read for any fan of the genre.
In "Future Indefinite", Edward Exeter sets out to deliberately fulfil the prophecies of the Filoby testament and 'bring death to Death'. His progress through the land and the prophecy as an increasingly (and deliberately) messianic figure (with some surprising overtones of the gospels) is among the most evocative and compelling of Duncan's writing. The central dilemna of the character is maintained with absolute consistency throughout (namely, how to defeat Zath without performing even worse deeds to acquire more mana), but despite the absolute internal logic of the text, Duncan somehow manages to spring a totally surprising but eminently satisfying ending (which is obvious in retrospect, but impossible to anticipate).
Basically, read this book now. Read the first two books in the series (they're worth reading in their own right, but essential as a prelude to this masterpiece), but be prepared for something special with this book. Fantasy at its best.
