Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) was a German psychiatrist and existentialist philosopher, who wrote many important books such as Reason and Existenz, Philosophy of Existence, Way to Wisdom: An Introduction to Philosophy, Man in the Modern Age, etc.

The translator notes, “The Future of Mankind was written to elaborate a lecture which Karl Jaspers broadcast in the fall of 1956. Deluged with letters, he asked his correspondents in a prefatory note to ‘take this book for an answer to their objections, questions, and imprecations.’ The book was published in 1958 and evoked reactions ranging from the Peace Prize of the German book trade to savage attacks from opponents of German rearmament and of the Western alliance.”

Jaspers wrote in the Foreword, “An altogether novel situation has been credited by the atom bomb. Either all mankind will physically perish or there will be a change in the moral-political condition of man. This book is an attempt to clarify what strikes us as a choice between two fantasies… The point of this book is, first, to take note of the facts, to visualize the world situation, to test all viewpoints, one by one, and to get our bearings in the entirety of realities and possibilities… This book wants to aid in bringing the political consciousness of our time into an encompassing ‘suprapolitical’ whole.
