I liked that he introduced readers to a cornucopia of powerful thinkers and their ideas, like Kevin Kelly's The Inevitable: Understanding the 12 Technological Forces That Will Shape Our Future, Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind" and Peter Diamandis's "Abundance." What shapes the future of marketing is what's shaping the future of all commerce and our world at large. Wuebben does a great job of explaining these concepts and their relevance to marketing, e.g. Collaborative Innovation Networks (COINS), swarm creativity, the 8 expanding dimensions of the web, and Blockchain technology. He then uses all of this information to paint a picture of marketing in 2021 and 2030. If you'd like to know where the marketing puck is going to be, this is the book you need to implement Wuebben's overarching recommendation: "Make your prospective customers feel like they are buying from a friend."
-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil, Happiness Engineer & author of Should I Go to Medical School?: An Irreverent Guide to the Pros and Cons of a Career in Medicine
One thing that really stood out was something he wrote right at the beginning of the book which fits today's cultural and political climate perfectly. He said, "It's not about being Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, or anything else - it's about being human and doing right by your fellow human beings".
And for those who really care about the future of our planet as a whole, another quote that hit home with me was this: "A circular economy is an economic process by which resources are reused and waste minimized before being returned to the world from which they were extracted." For anyone who writes ad copy, does content marketing, or if you are a marketer of any type, this is the book for you! Learn from the man who has been there, and still has a deep passion and enthusiasm for the marketing world. Jon has so many words of wisdom to share, making this the best book for marketing in 2017 and beyond.
Most readers will find themselves nodding in some sections of the book and woefully shaking their heads in others. We don't have to like every aspect of the future, but whether you are a business owner, leader, marketing professional or content creator -- you need to understand where we're heading so you can plan accordingly.
A fast read that will stick with you long after you put the book down.
Thought provoking and maybe a little bit unsettling. The transformation of how we communicate with and engage with customers will either put many marketers out of work or connect them to customers like never before.
Readers will find inspiration and possibly a little in trepidation about how marketing will change in the coming years. It's an excellent primer for preparing to meet these changes head on. A fascinating read.
