Editorial Reviews
The Beths occupy a warm, energetic sonic space between joyful hooks, sun-soaked harmonies, and acerbic lyrics. Their debut album Future Me Hates Me, produced by guitarist Jonathan Pearce and forthcoming on Carpark Records, delivers an astonishment of roadtrip-ready pleasures, each song hitting your ears with an exhilarating endorphin rush. 2018 promises to be a breakout year for The Beths, a beloved live act across Australia and New Zealand, who are embarking on North American and European tours this summer. Fans of artists like Sleater-Kinney and Best Coast should remain on high alert for the first full-length from their new favorite band.

Great power pop from NZ! I had heard “You Wouldn’t Like Me” on the radio (89.3 The Current) and loved it, then a friend said he couldn’t stop listening to the whole album, so I got it. He was right; it’s awesome. Lots of memorable tunes, and great lyrics about (mostly) failed relationships or fear of the same. Very relatable and personal, but hitched to great melodies and punchy instrumentation.

The remote island country of New Zealand has a surprising history of producing some of the finest indie guitar pop groups around including; The Bats, The Chills, Crowded House and the Mutton Birds among many others. With this potent combination of brilliantly crafted songs and guitar punch the Beths debut album proudly carries on this tradition! The band is led by singer/songwriter Elizabeth Stokes whose clarion voice carries every song and provides an undeniable charm to this record. The album revolves around heartbreak and failed relationships which is evident even in the title. It's this dichotomy with the bright upbeat instrumentation and the band's fresh energy that keeps these songs happily stuck in your head! Jonathan Pearce (guitar, vocals, producer), Benjamin Sinclair (bass, vocals) and Ivan Lukatina-Johnston (drums) provide the perfect base for Stoke's sunny lilting voice. Many of the tunes feature the soft/loud dynamic found in so many great rock bands (Nirvana, Pixies) but the transition is so seamless all you remember are the catchy hooks that pile up like so much spun gold in the verses and choruses. Some of my favorites on the record are "Little Death", "You Wouldn't Like Me", "Great No One" and the title track, but honestly every one of the ten tracks is faultless. Each year you hope to hear a great new band that becomes a favorite and in 2018 we lucked into the Beths!

As the Program Director of a Community Radio station, I am on the front lines of independent music as it is released. As I heard our programmers playing tracks off this album, it caught my ear each time. I took the time to listen to the CD straight through, and loved the styles, lyrics, and catchy melodies. I knew I had to have this in my vinyl collection. This is a rare longer player that has quality all the way through.

Now about the delivery. Amazon decided to shove a record in a plastic bag and ship it. I honestly don’t know who thought that would be a good idea. The album cover is all twisted and bent up. The record survived though. Just annoying. They usually always ship vinyl in a heavy cardboard mailer.
I gave four stars for the album itself but Amazon needs to do better.

Never heard of them before but it was on sale and I read some good reviews so I rolled the dice. Nice catchy pop tunes. Very enjoyable. Nice easy listening. I like it a lot. Kind of like the music you’d hear on a Zach Braff or late 90’s, early 2000’s soundtrack. Record was a cool clear vinyl with yellow spatters.

This was one where I hit the buy button about 6 chords into the video for "Future Me Hates Me".
Power pop that checks out all the books in the hook library. Instant classic.

This is one of my favorite albums in years. It's very punk and very pop at the same time. Their use of vocals -- not just the lead vocals, which are great -- but the *creative use of vocals as instruments* makes this record stand out. They are former music students -- jazz students actually -- and you can tell in their instrumental precision. It's not easy to play at these tempos -- the drummer is working very hard! The production by the guitarist is excellent and they should never let anyone else produce them -- he knows exactly what he's doing. Which can be said for this band as a whole.

Such a cool album. The songs are catchy while also having meaning. Her voice is great with the lyrics. The Beths are definitely a must listen in the indie rock world.

Future me won't hate this album...

Occupying an interesting niche somewhere between the All-Girl Summer Fun Band and Upset, the Beths are easily the most interesting thing to come out of NZ in a long while. This album's lynchpin is the title track - one of those utterly perfect pop songs that you know within the first few chords you're going to love forever (and which absolutely refuses to get out of your head). Unfortunately, the rest of the songs don't quite reach this standard, although the opener 'Great No One' comes pretty close. Overall this is punchy, snappy indie pop with some wry observations on human relationships - well worth adding to your rotation.

Good, honest, pop music!

If you’re old enough to remember Echobelly, Sleeper, Elastica et al you’ll enjoy The Beths. Really easy to listen to, there’s nothing particularly challenging here, either sonically or lyrically. It’s a short album full of up-tempo, female vocal, guitar led pop songs. Recommended.

Both copies I received had identical scratches. Returned.

Great record but the first vinyl copy I had delivered was scratched in two placed and very noticeable on the record, the replacement I received had identical scratches on the same place on the disk.
