A Compelling Vision of the Future
“Maynard has written a thoughtful and thought-provoking response to the moment we’re in, chronicling how we got here, where we’re going, and what role we have in that journey” ―Ramona Pringle, Director of Creative Innovation Studio and Associate Professor, Ryerson University
#1 New Release in Science & Math and Physics of Time
Human beings can―and do―change the future. Humanity has gained the ability not only to imagine the future, but to design and engineer it. At times entertaining, and at others profound, Future Rising provides an original perspective on our relationship with the future.
We have a responsibility to change the future for the better. As a species, we have become talented architects of our future. And yet, we so often struggle to come to terms with what this means. As innovation and rapidly shifting norms and expectations drive our world at breakneck speed, we sometimes need to find a still, quiet place to pause and think. Future Rising sets out to create such a quiet place, where we can take advantage of our species' knowledge of world history, and the importance of science to piece together a positive future.
To create a good future, rediscover the past. Our relationship with the future is inextricably intertwined with where we've come from, who we are, and what we aspire to. Written to be easy to pick up and hard to put down, Future Rising starts at the beginning of all things with the Big Bang and traces a pathway along the emergence of intelligent life, through what makes humans uniquely capable of imagining and creating different futures.
In a series of sixty short reflections, Future Rising will take you on a journey into:
- What "the future" actually is
- How it molds and guides our lives
- How we can use the history of the world to change our future
If you enjoy nonfiction science and history books like Life 3.0, The Future of Humanity, or Superintelligence, then you'll love Future Rising.

Review
A deeply researched book that will make you question the morality of technology, and how science has shaped the world today. Maynard’s incisive take on cutting edge problems make this a rewarding experience for anyone questioning what the future will look like. - Zara Stone, journalist and author of The Future of Science is Female.
“Humans have a unique ability to create technologies that profoundly impact our bodies and environment. As the power technology affords us grows, it’s important to understand how we got to this point, and our responsibilities to the future. Andrew Maynard, a tech geek with a big heart, takes you on a journey from the big bang to the present. He implores the reader to understand our relationship to technology and plan ahead so that when the future rises to meet us we are prepared to make it a future of which we can be proud.” - Dr. Kelly Weinersmith, co-author of Soonish
"Taking the reader on a journey through time, space, and the human experience, “Future Rising” makes you think about our responsibility to the future of our species and our planet in a refreshing way without a complete “doom and gloom” lens that so many futurism tales can take." - Dr. Tanya Harrison, co-author of For All Humankind

What struck me most about these two books – published more than 20 years apart – was how much Future Rising represents a much-needed modern take on AtKisson’s message of hope amidst circumstances and a future that appear increasingly desperate. Indeed, the human condition is nothing if not a shining blue dot of hope surrounded by a dark sea of desperation – an image Maynard evokes throughout Future Rising. Each generation has a tendency to view its circumstances as more dire than the last, and each requires a voice to remind them – against all assertions to the contrary – that there remains not only hope for a more sustainable and equitable future but also a path to realize it. Maynard doesn’t necessarily offer a prescriptive solution to the challenges facing humankind, but it’s evident throughout Future Rising that solutions still exist and that genuine hope resides in him – both of which are comforting to hear from an experienced techno visionary with an authoritative vantage point. Instead, Maynard outlines 60 essential components – framed as individual chapters or, more appropriately, meditations – that factor into realizing a more hopeful future (or, importantly, veering off course).
Future Rising is a uniquely constructed, thought-provoking journey that takes the reader from the origins of our universe and life on earth to a vision of the future that requires uniquely human experiences and collective action to prevent future suffering. Indeed, the only elements in the book that reside between past and future are “uniquely human”. While the chapters have a logical order, they can just as easily be read, re-read, and contemplated independently. Be prepared: Future Rising is more a meditation than a story. A desire for thoughtful contemplation on each topic linking humans to their shared past and future is the one ingredient that a reader must bring to each moment they spend with this book. As a rational optimist, Maynard ensures that hope is ever present, but the sobering undertones are no mistake and reflect the undeniable truth that the window of opportunity for humans to positively affect the future is closing.

Zu meiner Betrübnis habe ich das Buch erst nach meiner Lektüre Homo Deus' gelesen, so dass der zusätzliche Erkenntnisgewinn für mich leider kaum vorhanden war.
