All in all, best 50 bucks I've spent in quite awhile.
Whether or not you buy this one, just make sure you get something with atleast 2 gigs of ram. ! gig just isnt enough to run kodi and other things right
The biggest annoyance is that their is often a slight lag, sometimes their is a long lag, and sometimes Kodi crashes. I've also had to do a hard reboot today but holding down the power button on the remote until I saw an option to reboot. Luckily I knew to do that from past experience. Stability isn't great, but mainly it crashed while I was going through changing the UI and add-ons to fit my need. And starting a stream can take about 10 seconds on average, but it doesn't really bother me though because I'm not a channel flipper. Unfortunately, as of my research as of writing this on 11/14/16, stepping up to the $80-100 area didn't seem to bring an ARM CPU that provides enough processing speed for Linux not to lag yet. I'm not aware of any Android TV's that come with a CPU that is measurably faster. The more expensive ones primarily offer more features, accessories, and an upgraded GPU for 4K processing.
My unit came with Android 6.0.1 with the August 2016 security update. One concern I have is how long these will be kept up to date security wise.
The blue light on the front of these is really bright, but I plan on putting a piece of electrical tape, or a colored post it note, to tame it a bit. It burns my eyes in the dark. I wish these companies would use a Red LED like they did in the old days, or at least Green. Red is the least irritating, and easiest to ignore in dark environments.
The case is very small, and it doesn't get hot when I checked it while streaming an HD stream. I can place it on top of my AV receiver without worrying about it blocking ventilation or overheating from a hot environment.
Getting this working is very easy. Configuring it so that it doesn't have so many add-ons I'll never use took me an hour or two because I have never used it before. I'm still kind of confused why the UI is so basic and setup the way it is. I can't figure out how to replace the default apps on the KODI startup screen. So I have to do many more times as many button pushes to get to what I want. I know there has to be a way to fix that, but at the moment I'm stumped. These Android TV's don't come with a manual for KODI, and this Fxexblin TX5 Pro only came with a manual for basic hardware and WiFi connection setup, but the initial setup is easy enough and I'm sure there are plenty of places to learn how to configure KODI. So if you don't have experience with KODI then you might want to have a laptop or smartphone to be able to pull up the manual when you get lost.
The best video add-on I've found so far is called USTVNow. You will be able to finally get broadcast HDTV. They offer 45 days free HDTV, but otherwise it's a choice between SD for free or HD for $20-30 a month. But living in the U.S., there aren't any great options for getting broadcast HDTV (ie Fox, NBC, ABC, CBS) service for less than $20-30/month. I would pay $10 for HD. If I did much travelling I would sign up for it just so I could get local sports and news while travelling. It is possible to also watch USTVNow from most Tablets, smartphones, or laptop/desktops.
I've briefly used a number of other Video add-ons for Kodi and I've found that the movie selections are amazing. However a lot of the add-ons are for kids, or for stuff I don't like (ie anime, soccer, european/asian TV channels). And searching through the myriad of add-ons isn't easy. There are no screen previews to get an idea of what they offer. Often I think I'm downloading or opening an add-on for Football, but it's actually soccer because the United States uses the world differently than the rest of the world.
This really is a great product for the rest of the world where their isn't so much IP protection in media. Living in the US with all these media restrictions kind of hinders this product a little here, but this is a great inexpensive toy for me because I enjoy playing with new toys. Plus it fits into my hardware needs better than anything else I've found.
I'm looking forware to seeing what they can do by fusing these with a newer ARM core. The A53 cores are slightly too slow, and I've been waiting for newer A72 cores for over a year now. But for now $47 is a safe investment until those Android TV's get made.
The remote control works very well and is fast/responsive. One drawback with the remote and on screen keyboard is that when you go all the way to the left, if you hit left again most devices scroll it through to the right side of the keyboard, this doesn't, so you have to click all the way right if you were to go from "a" to "L" as an example. Not a big deal though as I ended up using a wireless keyboard and mouse setup anyways.
As for the pre-loaded apps, and overall functionality, they all worked well right from setup. this is essentially a mini-computer using android software.
Some reviews complained about buffering and slow loading, but keep in mind your own home internet speed and bandwidth availability. Those play more of a role into streaming speeds than the hardware itself.
A friend of mine paid about the same price for his unit which is a different product, but his definitely is slower considering his is 1GB/8GB, and not just for streaming, his is slower even with loading apps themselves that don't require internet.
Thus far, excellent product and exceeded my expectations, especially at this price.
The remote is probably the only weak point but once you get used to it it's fine. It is pretty easy to navigate once you do the initial set up. It is also preloaded With lots of apps that have great channels. I'm getting one more and Cutting the cord!! Cable cord!!!
