Perhaps it would be useful if bought with an area lighthouse map for each area visited.
I would also recommend American Lighthouses by Bruce Roberts and ray Jones, even if it is a bit outdated.
The addition of lightships and lifesaving stations is a nice bonus. These sites often fail to receive their just due, over-shadowed by the better known and more loved lighthouses. Yet, all worked in concert to keep mariners safe and prevent devastating loss of life and cargoes. Today's Coast Guard owes its existence to these antecedents. It's multi-faceted mission reflect the duties of the old Revenue Cutter Service--policemen of the waters--the U.S. Lighthouse Establishment, and the venerable U.S. Lifesaving Service. Follansbee recognizes this important triumvirate, offering the public the chance to see connections as they visit these related sites.
Lighthouses take center stage, however. No one can say exactly how many remain in our nation, as the definition of lighthouse varies, depending on who you ask.Read more ›
