This is a dark, brooding, character-driven gem of a story about a Joe gone so deep undercover that his morality has not merely been compromised; it has been obliterated. And quite deliberately, it turns out. I won't say more so as not to ruin the surprise, but this is a lovely bit of writing. Costa and Gage are thus far the only people to pick up the reins of the G.I. Joe franchise who have been able to rival, and even surpass, the intelligence, depth, and complexity of the G.I. Joe universe that Larry Hama created.
Very highly recommended. A bit surprising that Hasbro allowed this, but also a very good sign. It's been so well received that IDW is doing a second mini-series that picks up where this one left off. More good news.
If you're not a G.I. Joe fan at all, this book stands on its own quite well as a nice bit of film noir in comic book form. You might find some of the character names rather odd, but other than that, you won't feel you're reading something based on a line of children's toys.
The story is amazing and once I finished reading it, I wanted more. I can't wait to see more of this!

As the story of a GI Joe double agent who is trying to infiltrate the dangerous Cobra organisation, this is where it all starts to get murky. The clear lines of "this is the good guy, and this is the bad guy" are blurred as good people do awful things, and thoroughly horrific people reveal what may be interpreted as noble motives.
Set aside a couple of hours and read this in one go and it'll be like reading a really good Noir thriller!
