I purchased this very nice looking external HD for my vast photo collection and to back up my MacBPro on Time Machine. It worked very nicely for three years; I had almost used up the 4T. Then...suddenly, a few days ago, it stopped being recognized by my Mac. My state of panic was quite extreme. I had photos from 2007 backed up in there, plus myriads of bytes in documents, movies, slideshows, etc. It had been my go-to space saver.
After googling and asking around, I did different things: reboot, Disk Utilities, check cables and connections, etc. nothing...nada. I had to spring for tech advice which was costly and installed a piece of software that was able to scan the 4T...took like a day and a half to do that. Now I need another space tank to put what I've recovered into. After spending almost $200, I was hoping this baby was going to be the last one...but not to be. I did quite a bit of research and did not want to go with Toshiba or WD or even (shudder) Seagate...not sure what to do. I'm back at square one again since I can't return it and it's out of warranty. Wish I could get my money back. :(

UPDATE: 8/2/2019. I solved the issue by reformating the HD and now it works like a charm. However it is a bit picky when it comes to ejecting it, you have to wait. Otherewise a good piece.

I’m a long time G Drive fan and have been using them since 2007 (I still have two 500 gigabyte drives that I use for music and photos). My current 4tb G drive is exactly two years old and works perfectly as a time machine back up for my MacBook Pro. I toyed with purchasing a NAS but by purchasing a second 4tb G Drive for an alternating time machine back up I’ll effectively have a RAID array. I already save important files (photos, music, ebooks, etc) separately on other back up drives so the additional second drive is an additional fail safe. I was initially a bit concerned about the large number of one star reviews but if I receive a faulty drive I’ll simply return it or submit a warranty claim. These drives don’t receive gentle handling from delivery companies. While they are durable drives some aren’t going to survive unscathed when being tossed around during the delivery process. I’ll update this review after I’ve used the second drive (arriving today). Hopefully I’ll continue to have a good experience!

Update 10/19: my second unit arrived. After unpacking and letting it acclimate to room temperature I set it up as my second time machine drive. Everything works as expected with zero issues. Both drives function perfectly, aren’t noisy, and just run smoothly in the background. If that changes, I’ll update accordingly.

Easy backup tool, works with Apple Time Machine

Set up was easy, worked with Apple Time Machine right out of the box. I bought it to replace an Apple Sirport Express which had crashed. Airport is a router that also has an internal storage disk, and Time Machine backs up your device(s) to Airport automatically. The only feature about G-Technology 4TB G-Drive USB External hard drive is that it does not work (that is, I can't figure out how to make it work) through the network; that is, through the wireless router. You have to plug your device into the G-Technology 4TB G-Drive USB External hard drive to back up the device. Which it does quickly & easily, which is what I really wanted most of all.

I noticed there was a lot of negative reviews on this device. I was skeptical about buying it at first but it was also an Amazon choice as well and, most of the time, I trust those options. Other online stores that have the same brand were filled with positive reviews but were overpriced.

I had my eye on this particular external hard drive for a while and I needed one quick because I do audio/music production, I was afraid that my computer was going to slow down due to the fact that I had a lot of audio plugin software that uses an enormous amount of power. In spite of the fact that I still had a LOT of storage left on my computer, I wanted to save it some power to have a smoother and faster workflow.

I chose the G-Technology external hard drive because it looks very attractive and, as of now, I haven't had any problems with it so far after one week of usage. It works great and everything seems to be working according to the plan. Hopefully, it'll stay this way for as long as possible. I do vocal recording, audio engineering and music production on the same computer as my workflow has gotten even better because of the external hard drive. I love it!

I am very pleased with the quality of this hard drive. It was plug-n-play (for a Mac), just as advertised. I took it out of the box, plugged it in, and off we went. I had previously had a Seagate external hard drive which has lasted happily for many years, so originally I ordered another Seagate (3 TB). As soon as I took the new Seagate out of the box I could see it was cheaply made. The sheet metal case had sharp corners that would cut skin. I sent it back immediately. A friend of mine has a portable (1 TB) G-Tech drive, one of two we trade back and forth to store our date off-site at each other's h comes. I had been very impressed with the quality of my friend's little G-Tech drive, so I ordered my 4 TB G-Tech drive (which lives permanently in my house for backup). I had read online reviews which rated G-Tech drives highly. It has the look and feel of a quality product. I have not had it long enough to make any statements about how it will hold up over time. But it was one of the few I found that has an ON/OFF SWITCH - a very important feature to me, since switching on the drive only when I want to back up saves greatly on wear on the drive, as opposed to other drives which are left running full time. G-Tech's tech support was very helpful in answering my questions before I bought the unit.

Although the hard drive inside is the best. G-tech use HGST drives, this particular design is not as good as their older ones. The previous designs were all aluminum and transferred heat from the drive to the case where it would be dissipated with a heat sink or a fan. This particular design the hard drive sits inside a plastic tray and after plugging the hard drive into diagnostic software it was running really hot. I mean really hot even to the touch the case was getting really warm as the drive could not dissipate heat very well. Looking visually at other Gtech drives it looks like this is the case for a lot of the newer drives. It would be a real shame as all my other G technology drives which are a few years older stay cool to the touch all day long. This is what gives hard drives better life. From the top of my head the diagnostic software said this hard drive had reached 84°C and had prolonged periods of 65 to 70°C during use. That’s just not good hard drives inside my Mac Pro barely ever reach 35°C. Let’s see how long it lasts.

- Update, after getting a second G-Drive, this time a 6TB I have taken the drives out of the enclosure and running them inside a Mac Pro where their temperature is kept well within reasonable limits with a FAN.

G TECHNOLOGY please start designing good drive enclosures again! Whats the point in putting enterprise class hard drives inside cheap plastic trays so they bake them selves to death... unless that IS your plan, and then when they fail, how do you expect people to then want to buy another drive from you?

Works and look great! Mac plug and play simplicity - it came up right away on my desktop along with a folder of tools to format the drive for windows if needed. This drive was the perfect fit for my backups and photo/video editing needs. I am particularly happy at how cool the drive runs, as the entire aluminum case itself is a heat sink!
It was very important for me to find a unit that has a dedicated power on/off button so that I can ensure it is not running when not needed. Overall, the G-drive performs better than I expected. It works really fast with my Mac and I am very satisfied with this product. The only mild annoyance is the flashing white logo on the front, which at first I thought looked really cool, but at night, when I am trying to sleep it can get annoying. So I simply put a black sticker over it - solved!
