I opened the device to determine why it failed so fast, and found very poor thermal design. The disk has an airgap between the bottom classes and is isolated using 3 support pads with poor thermal contact. Rather than using some thermally conductive sil padding, to improve thermal performance, they just used these 3 poorly placed pads .
I am sure I violated the warranty and cannot get an RMA now since I opened it, but given the poor design quality I would not trust their products with my data anyways. Very dissapointed in the design of this drive. If they increased the thermal conductivity and added some more passive cooling features (maybe some side air vents to allow minor air exchange / sil padding to increase thermal conductivity) it would be a much better product.
At the outset, the only positive things I will say about this drive are its specs on paper: it's 7200RPM and thunderbolt; but I'm not seeing speeds that seem drastically different than the Lacie Thunderbolt mobile I've got (I had to retire that one because I manually stored a lot of data on it, got a new laptop, and don't want to format it to use as a Time Machine). So I shopped for a new Time Machine disk, something small, and almost went with the Lacie Rugged, but read a review saying the newer model was the most returned disk at the Apple store now.
I noticed during the initial Time Machine backup that the drive was extremely hot. Now I'm worried that the drive will fail. I read another review here (search for "heat") from a gentleman who seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to hardware components, and whose drive failed due to excess heat (note, OSX will not warn you if your hard drive exceeds its heat limitations)..
He noted that the drive does not properly dissipate heat, and with heavy use, will fail.
I think he is correct about these drives. It is a shame, because a lot of people are using these for backup purposes, which can take a long time, even with Thunderbolt. If you're doing something intensive like video editing, or pro audio, it could be even worse.
It doesn't make me very comfortable about the long-term integrity of my data. I'm still doing the initial Time Machine backup (it's slower than I expected), and the hard drive is too hot to handle; it's painful to the touch.
I don't remember any of the multiple Lacie Rugged Mobile hard drives I've owned ever having this problem. I wish I'd just stuck with Lacie.
