Guaranteed Performance

The G-Technology G-RAID is guaranteed to support the simultaneous playback of multiple layers of video in real-time in Final Cut Pro, Premiere and Xpress. This claim is 100% guaranteed, not marketing hype--stream counts during in-house testing of the G-Technology G-RAID are calculated using a G-Technology G-RAID filled to 80% capacity and incorporate a full seek from the first file to the last file on the drive. Experience 2 simultaneous video streams for 8/10 bit SD, 4 for DVCPRO HD, 5 for HDV, and 8 for DV25--this is the minimum guaranteed performance from a G-Technology G-RAID. Stream counts will be significantly greater on a clean drive when attached via eSATA.

To unleash the ultimate performance of the G-Technology G-RAID, connect the system to your workstation using one of G-Technology's high-speed eSATA host adapters (sold separately). The low-cost PCIe x1 adapter provides up to 100MB/second while the PCIe x4 card provides an amazing 200+ MB/second on reads and writes.

I've owned about 10 GRaid drives over the past few years. I thought it was just me.....nearly a 75% failure rate.

I purchased two new Graid Gen4 2tb drives in October 2010. One drive was totally dead, DOA, right out of the box.

GTech informed me today that "We no longer repair drives." Oh. Maybe they were thinking something else, but that really gives me pause about customer service and warranty reliablility.

Need further proof? Simply go to [...] and look under FORUMS. There you will find one for GTech. Man you will get an eye full! "Now my 2nd GRAID is failing!" "Lost all data, HELP!" "Drive won't mount". "Power button won't work." "Drive makes strange noises". And my favorite, "Are all GTech drives really bad, or is it just me?"

Nope, it isn't "just you". I've had the president of GTech call me and replace ALL of my GRAID drives because I raised such a stink about the lousy quality and the failure rate. At that time, I had 3 or 4 drives fail in a year--one only 9 months new, and the replacement RMA drive failing after 30 days!

Now this....2 new drives, purchased here through Adorama (which I hold totally blameless) and one of them is totally dead. According to GTech, my only option is to return the drive to Adorama and have them ship me another drive--with no assurances that it will work, either.

I would love to really believe in or trust GTech, but no longer. As soon as I can afford it, I will replace my 4 (hopefully) running GRaid drives with another manufacturer.

I'm not a nut. I don't have my video editing suite located over power lines, or an ancient Indian burial ground. They are in an air conditioned room with superb ventilation. But they don't last. They don't work.

I purchased mine a month ago to hold my sample library (I'm a composer and have roughly 1TB so far of virtual instrument libraries).

During the second week, I noticed a "Device Removal!" error (meaning, the drive had unexpectedly disconnected from the Mac); I figured it was a fluke. But last night, it did this three times, during a big read operation. Hideous. Specifically, I was opening a project that used a number of orchestral instruments, and the G-Tech drive dismounted in the middle of their loading process. OUCH.

I've taken the exchange route this time, but if the replacement drive exhibits the same behavior, I'm getting a refund and moving on. (Up to now, I've gotten most of my audio-purposed drives from Other World Computing and had pretty good luck - one failure in I think 8 years.)

G-Tech cannot advertise this drive as suitable for A/V/Digital Media work -- or much of anything else, really -- if this is how it performs. I'll report back after I get my replacement.

I have a design production studio and while we have used G-Drives forever, something bad has happened to both their quality control and customer service. We have had 3 consecutive failures of 2TB and 4TB drives. The 4TB drive gave me an error message when I first got it. We have now invested so much time in troubleshooting and being shuffled around by the G-Tech Customer Service reps that I have decided to return it to Amazon and to find a better company to deal with. If you are considering buying a G-Tech drive I want you to consider the following - We invested many hours in finding out the device has a problem, sent it back and got back the same hard drive with the same information and icon from my studio in place. I initialized the drive and then plugged it in after remove the same make drive that is not having a problem. It gave me the same error message that caused me to send it in in the first place. The customer service rep, Angel, refused to treat our second failure as anything other than a routine RMA and started us on the trouble shooting again.

I will never, never buy a G-Tech product again. They are badly made and they are not supported by intelligent service. I have a quote from our CS rep - We can't give you your money back because we are not the retailer and you have to go through trouble shooting to get an RMA! OK I am sending it back to Amazon. At least they have good customer service.

Needed more room to store photographic and video files. Another unnamed drive has failed me twice, but this product has proven to do the job.
This is the second G-raid I've bought and I'm pleased with the design and quality.

I ordered this drive thinking that it was RAID 1 compatible, but I was totally wrong and should have read the description better (my fault). None the less this product was rock solid and is great. I would definitely recommend this for those who are in the market for a kick-ass RAID 0 drive. It's built like a tank and fast.

A RAID is a "Redundant Array of Independent Disks." The "RAID" in "G-RAID" is not redundant.

No matter what definition you use, the "R" in RAID stands for "Redundant." This is always true with the exception of RAID 0 which isn't really a RAID at all. With the very basic RAID, RAID 1, you have a mirrored copy of all information on both drives in the pair. With RAID 0 you have what's called a stripe set; bits of files are written to multiple disks in a set. No one disk contains a whole file (usually), so all drives are required for you to be able to access your data.

When I dig deeper into the reviews on here (Amazon) I notice a lot of people giving the drives negative scores because of the failure rate. My drive hasn't failed. I'm giving this drive a negative rating for mis-branding. Because the drive is called G-RAID, and I read far enough down to see that the "drive" came with 2 disks, I assumed that the drive was a RAID 1. Because of this I purchased the drive for doing backups on data that I would like to keep. Upon realizing my mistake some months after having purchased my drive, (finally got around to using it), I realize that I need to get a different drive for backups. I had actually done my pre-purchase "research" on another site that did not indicate this is a RAID-0 drive, and ended up buying the drive from Amazon because of the cheaper price.

I was not intending on buying a stripe set for doing back-ups, but was mislead by the name on the unit. I have a stripe set with SSDs which is significantly faster than this drive will ever be, even with its Firewire 800 port because this drive uses physical disks. I purchased this device for use on one of my workstations as a back-up.
