Works great with Apple's Time Machine

Small, compact with beautiful industrial design. Runs fast and cool with only a slight, unobtrusive hum from its fan. Makes you wish more things had the Thunderbolt interface. Information included with the product on the proper way to unmount the device is a little sketchy. Somewhat overpriced for what it is.

April 25, 2014 revision:

Well my first review of the G-RAID was fairly positive, but my experience with the drive has taken a turn. It started when I would get a disk error message when Time Machine kicked in. Going to the OS X Disk Utility showed that one of the drives in the G-RAID was bad. The unit was only about four months old and still under warrantee. I called up G-Technology and while they seemed surprised by the failure--the help desk person seemed to indicate that failures with these things were rare--they immediately issued me an RMA number. I sent the bad unit back to them and they immediately sent me a new `refurbished' unit (more on this later). In the meantime, I had gotten myself another 8TB G-RAID. When I got my replacement G-RAID I set them both up in an alternating dual Time Machine array. Later versions of OS X allow you to do this.
There are some troubling aspects to this entire episode. First I was using my G-RAID as my sole Time Machine backup. When it failed, and before I was set up with a replacement, I had to count on the reliability of my iMac's hard drive--statistically speaking a relatively safe proposition. However, what if I had been using the G-RAID as the sole depository for some mission critical data? I would have had a tough problem on my hands. At least now I am using the laws of the physics of failure to my advantage, but it is still something to think about. Now about that refurbished unit. It is fully factory refurbished and guaranteed. Cosmetically there is no indication that it is not a fresh unit. It also means that another G-RAID either failed or was returned for some other reason.

<update> after the initial glitch it's been working smoothly so far (knock on the woods). Due tot he initial impression, am keeping this at the 4 star.
<update> - the drive started working back like normal but am still bit freaked out with the idea that this could stop at any time. I will monitor this for a month or so and will then update the rating.

I bought it couple of days back to use as my primary disk for my photos. I work on a MacBook pro retina and now after 2 days the hard disk is not being detected in mac. Weird. Am not sure what to make of it. I have sent an issue ticket to the seller. Hope they will reach to me back. Either this product is not good or am unlucky to get a bad batch. So, if this is not working in another few days then I will need to return this non functioning expensive aluminum box sigh !!!

I got a brand new iMac and was looking for a powerhouse of an external drive.
This G-raid works great, right out of the box. I didn't reformat it, plugged right into the thunderbolt - and there it was.
Some people complain about it going to sleep too often ... doesn't bother me, in fact I prefer it to spin down when not in use.

I was able to daisy chain the output to my external monitor and it all works great.
I edit a lot, all HD projects using Adobe Premiere CC.
Would recommend this drive for sure, in fact will pick up another one soon to back up my old macpro.

Massive storage, crazy fast data transfers but slow spinup time

Massive storage (8TB on mine) and super-fast data transfers (Thunderbolt) make this awesome.
But it sleeps when not in use and the several seconds you have to wait for it to spin back up and become accessible is an annoyance. That annoyance is far from a deal breaker, though. I wish it had some sort of 'stay awake' feature or at least something to allow me to specify when it would go to sleep but I am not aware of such functionality. I'm perfectly capable of deciding how 'green' I do or do not want to be; I don't need my drive to make such decisions for me.

Speed but ... slow wake-up time

I'm using this G-Technology G-RAID 4TB drive with the 2013 iMac27 fully equipped (32GB RAM, etc.). The drive is fast - however, there is a big con.

CON: The power saving features on the drive kick in fairly quickly and it requires about 10-15 seconds for it to "come alive" again. That delay is very annoying to me, and I have searched the web in vain for whether the power-down features are user adjustable in any way. If anyone has any constructive advice on this, I'd love to hear it.

PRO: Once the drive is awake, it is the fastest transfer of any I've used - far faster than USB3 and Firewire 800.

Recommendation: I would only recommend this drive if you have large amounts of data to transfer and will be doing so quickly enough that the drive doesn't go to sleep on you.

Not as fast I would have thought for a thunderbolt drive about 270MBs per second. Very noisy when drives are accessing so I had to move it out of the room to tolerate it and the light on the front is ridiculously bright.

Reilable and VERY fast

I've been using this for months now, mostly for video projects and music projects and so far it has not disappointed. It's incredibly fast and thankfully I haven't had any issues with reliability. I haven't timed it exactly, but I remember I was blown away at how fast it was backing up some of my video files, particularly when I was able to upload nearly 30gb of files to it in under 2 minutes. I probably boot this up a few times a week and leave it running for up to maybe 6 hours at a time, but I always turn it off when I'm done using it so hopefully that's helping to keep the wear down on it. It is a little on the noisy side, not super loud, but you'll definitely hear it when it's on and in use. Definitely too large for me to travel with, so it just stays on my desk and I have another smaller thunderbolt hard drive for portable use, but this is great for at home and I'm really happy with it.
