About 30 years ago in our first home we applied Milky Spore powder to our small lawn and never had a problem with grubs or Japanese Beetles (we still had to watch out for adults that migrated into our garden, solved primarily by a little hand picking and dropping into a pail of soapy water, pretty easy since the beetles' first reaction when disturbed is to drop -- straight into the pail!).

When we moved to a home with a much much larger lawn space, we chose to use the granulated, spreadable product as it was easier to apply. We are into third season of application, and so far similar results: no grub problems, and minimal adult beetles, though we are still breaking out the soapy water pails in the heart of summer, especially for our bean plants).

The granulated product seems expensive at first because of the repeat applications, but given its coverage, purchasing -- and applying -- the powder form would probably come out to a similar cost.

While other reviews make claims of immediately seeing dead grubs all over the place, this has not been our experience -- nor should it be. The treatment works because it infests the soil with a disease that infects only Japanese beetle grubs and slowly kills them. They die in the soil and spread more spores in the process. If they were all to crawl out and die on the sidewalks and pavements, the milky spore approach would not work (nothing to continue spreading the disease). So if you apply, don't expect to immediately see dead grubs all over the place. But then that is the beauty of organic pest control approaches: you are not trying to eradicate immediately a pest, but bring the population under control in a more balanced, ecosystem-friendly way that has the added benefit of lasting longer.

Last year moles moved into my backyard.....mole trails all over the place. The guy that aerates my lawn suggested Milky Spore. Skeptical, I researched it and found a surprisingly lot of positive reviews. Since I didn't want to kill the moles, just make them go away, figured it was worth a try. After one application, I stopped seeing moles trails. Research suggests using Milky Spore 3 times a year for 2 years. I've already put down the 2nd pass. I also read that adding nematodes to your yard along with the Milky Spore helps the results. Those little guys are living in my backyard now also.....no moles and any grubs I find are either dead or dying. I'm a true believer.

This is a terrific product. My yard has become a grub nursery over the years and I can already tell a difference since I have applied the milky spore mix.

PROS: Easy to spread but I would recommend a broadcast spreader instead of the drop spreader recommended by the manufacturer.

CONS: Description really needs to detail the application directions and how much the bag covers.

It is recommended that you use the product 3 times a years for 2 years for the most effective coverage. (I am planning to do this). Bag states it covers 7000 sq feet.

The last time I spread Milky Spore on my lawn and gardens was in the Fall of 2002 or maybe it was 2003. We had just been through a very bad season of Japanese Beetles and their grubs. Other remedies were only somewhat effective, even when applied every year. I had heard about Milky Spore and decided to try it, despite the relatively high cost.

Well, it's been 10 or 11 years with no trouble from those pests. I'm not happy to have found evidence of infestation now, but after all this time, I believe it is worth another application.

I am so happy to report that this works. Maybe not right before your eyes but after a few days you definitly see a reduction in Grub Worms. I have my own vegetable garden in my back yard about aprox 4000sq ft that I dedicated to this but when I first started these worms would devour my plants every time i put them down. Greedy badminded little bastards they are too because we have grass and they dont bother the grass but suck my veges dry.

So I must say thank god for milky spore.

In addition just to let you know that if you buy this make sure that you water it nicely into the soil every day or it seems the bacteria dont get far enough to kill the worms. You have to make sure you water it in everyday for atleast a week. I usually apply just a little more after my intitial application just to make sure that its in there. Once you see the worms turning black and becoming limp that means that it is working.

My suggestion is leave the worms in there (the soil) to die as the bag states that as they die the dead worms release more milky spore into the soil which is definitely a good thing. Give it a chance to work you wont regret it.

This is inert granular with powder coating. The active ingredient is 0.0006%. The package says you need 6 applications over a two-year period. If I knew this I never would have purchased. Milky White Spore Powder is 0.02% (http://www.amazon.com/St-Gabriel-Organics-8001096-10-Ounce/dp/B001D10EWO) and only needs one application. It should be written in the description what the ingredients are and the percentage! The powder is over 30% more active product than the granules.
AND!!! It will ONLY kill Japanese Beetle grubs, so be sure you have identified the critter you're trying to kill. You could end up spending a lot of money for nothing if you made the purchase to kill brown beetle grubs, as it won't work! These folks are not forthcoming with disclosure on the effectiveness of their product.
It does work, so if you have Japanese Beetles, get the powder, not the granules. Then make your own dispenser using a sturdy shipping tube or old wrapping paper tube. Find a cap that fits, tape it on tight, drill about 7 quarter-inch holes in the end-cap, fill the open end with spore and tap it on the ground with every long stride, creating a "You sank my battleship" pattern on the lawn, then water each with a flower pot watering dispenser to get the spore moist and into the soil. About two years later, you'll be grub free. It lasts about 10 years. Good Luck!
