The clackers are very solid and LOUD. Expect to wake up your neighbors with this keyboard. If you're into that (which I am) then you will be happy.
The only reason it is not 5 stars (given the price), is because the pictures fail to show how high above the keyboard these keys are raised. It doesn't affect comfort much, but it looks uglier than I thought it would be.
Shipping on this keyboard was crazy fast, even by Prime standards. I ordered in the afternoon and the keyboard arrived before noon the next day. It comes in a nice printed box with some product images and features. Although my box had a couple of little nicks, it was packed securely enough to protect the keyboard during transit and the box design is nice enough for gifting.
Inside the box is the keyboard itself in a thin mesh sleeve, and a plastic bag containing a product manual and some Gamdias stickers. The stickers are a nice little touch, and the manual has some key (heh) information about some of the built in functions and hotkeys for changing and setting the different backlight patterns.
Usually when I get a new keyboard, I spend the first few days thinking, "I can't wait until this feels like my old keyboard." I've always disliked that little adjustment period where you have to get used to the minute little differences in key spacing and sensitivity. I was worried I would have an even bigger problem with this keyboard once I took it out and saw how "tall" the keys seemed to be compared to what I was used to. In reality, his is the first time when I haven't had those "new keyboard problems". This keyboard felt incredibly natural and responsive right out of the box.
I definitely should have believed all of those people when they said there was a big difference in feel between mechanical and membrane keyboards, because there really is. Keystrokes feel more natural, and feedback is much quicker and clearer. I've used this for gaming, coding, and just plain old typing, and it's been perfectly fine in all of these areas.
The thing that pulled me to this keyboard over some options in this price range from other brands is appearance. Colored backlighting was a must have for me, which eliminated options like the Logitech G710+, and of what remained I definitely think this is one of the best looking options. With the backlight off, it's a nice, sleek black keyboard with a small profile for a gaming keyboard and a minimalist look. With the backlights on, it's absolutely stunning. The colors are super vivid, and you can adjust the brightness and patterns to suit your needs.
Built in, there are 9 preset patterns that you can switch to using the Fn+[hotkey]. I haven't decided which one is my favorite so far, but they're all pretty fun and certainly nice to look at. For starters, Fn+8 gives you the "ripple" effect in which the backlights are off by default but typing sends a "ripple" of light out from each key press. Maybe not the most practical effect, but it's just plain good looking and shows off the response time of the keys.
You can also program up to five presets of you own. For example, you could set Fn+1 to backlight only the keys used in a game's control scheme (WASD, Shift, Ctrl, etc.) and then have different presets for different games. I'm pretty sure this is next on my list. For better or worse, all of the custom lighting set up is done through the keyboard itself. There isn't any separate software package to set it up, you just press a hotkey to enter the editing mode and then adjust the keys. There is software on the Gamdias website that I believe can be used for additional features like setting up macros or different profiles.
For those who care, which is probably a lot of the mechanical keyboard market, this keyboard uses clone blue switches as opposed to authentic Cherry MX Blues. The higher end Gamdias keyboards use Cherry MX switches, though some of those are brown or red instead. Because these are blue switches, they have a clicky feedback that is great for accuracy but obviously louder than your standard keyboard and even most other mechanicals. This keyboard is for a PC in a place where I don't have to worry about having quiet key presses, but I might look for one of the red switch keyboards instead if noise level is a concern.
Cherry switches or not, this keyboard definitely feels high quality and built to last. The metal plate gives it more heft than the Logitech G11 it replaced, but in a good way. It doesn't shift around on my desk and I expect to get years of use out of it. The USB cable is long enough for most PC set ups, and braided for durability. The connector itself is gold plated and shaped so that it's easy to squeeze in between other ports, which is appreciated. I hate when one USB device blocks off two ports because some manufacturer decided that they needed some big fat connector.
I think I've covered pretty much all of my thoughts about this keyboard, which is probably the most thoughts I've had about any keyboard. I feel like I've been let into the secret club of mechnical keyboard owners, and now I understand why they recommend them all the time. If I had a complaint about this keyboard, other than maybe the off brand switches, it's probably the lack of an option (that I can find) for solid color backlighting. My desktop lighting/LCD and mouse both use blue backlights (as did my G11) so I guess it would be nice to have an option for purely blue backlights on this keyboard too. However, the thing is so darn pretty that I can't really hold that against it.
Definitely hugely happy with this keyboard. I did receive a discount for agreeing to write an honest review, but I would still be thrilled if I paid full price for it. It's a pleasure to look at and to type on.
KEY FEATURES LIKE WASD EXCHANGE, MUSIC CONTROL, VOLUME, WINDOWS KEY LOCK.
CHERRY MX BLUES
MULTIPLE RGB COLOR PATTERNS
SPACEBAR FEELS HEAVY AND STUBBORN
From a gaming perspective, I generally play FPS or Simulators and so far its worked out great. No complaints from the gaming site.
If I had to give it one critique, it would be that my typos have increased as you barely have to push a key for it to enter it; however, this is more about me learning to type on a mech keyboard rather than dragging my fingers around on a traditional keyboard.
The keyboard and mouse came in a great box that protected them well. The cords on both are about 6ft in length and work perfect for me as I have the tower underneath my desk. If you have your tower away from your desk, you may need an extension for the USB cables.
I received this product at a discounted rate for my honest and unbiased review.
