Editorial Reviews

Bass Drum of Death's debut full-length, GB City, might be described by most listeners as garage-rock. But perhaps the more apt term is basement-rock. It turns out that the duo's frontman, John Barrett, wrote and recorded the album in a series of basement apartments. Armed with a guitar, drum kit, and USB microphone, Barrett threw together scuzzy pop songs steeped in punk and doo-wop that dive into topics such as taking drugs, having sex, and other regular teenage activities.

As stated in my title, Bass Drum of Death is a lo-fi, garage rock band, who are creating a lot of sound with only a few instruments and a lot of snarly attitude. This album is full of great energy, noisy guitars and a thumping bass drum (as advertised).

The first track, "Nerve Jamming," is a driving anthem, and I imagine would be great to see live. Oddly, "Gb City," the title track is one of my least favorites, as it lacks a great hook and some of the more interesting ideas of the other songs.

Other standouts on the album include "Get Found" and "Velvet Itch", the later having a flashy, glam rock sound.

"Spare Room" and "Young Pros" both sound like tracks right off the last Wavves album, so if you like fuzzy, distorted guitars and vocals, you are in the right place. I think Wavves is pretty tremendous, so I'm all for it.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think this is a must add album for any dedicated followers of minimalist, guitar-driven garage sounds, the likes of Ty Segall and Wavves.

While this is not a 5 star album, like Segall's "Melted" (2010), as a debut CD, it's pretty damn good. I think this group is going to do some great things and can't wait for their next effort.

There's almost nothing I can say about this music that it doesn't say for itself. It's grungy, it's garagey, it's sure to lure comparisons to acts like The Vines. In the end all I can note, really, is that the songs are awesome (especially tracks 2 and 8) and you should check it out.

GB City is a great album to listen to in its entirety. Each track is rocking and short, and John Barrett's dirty mind and lyrics are hard to deny. Special tracks are Nerve Jamming, High School Roaches, and Young Pros. Look forward to much more from this emerging band.

This album is spectacular. They are playing right along side the other bands bringing back the new take on garage rock. Bands like Harlem, early White Stripes, Ty Segall, and some Wavves songs. Good Stuff.

Good stuff. Lo-fi garage rock at its finest. Not for everyone, but if you're part of that everyone...you're missing out.
