Enjoy gardening again with this innovative cultivator from Black & Decker. Perfect for general weeding or the cultivation of flower, vegetable, or landscape beds, the #GC818 helps prepare the soil for planting and seeding so your flowers and produce are more likely to take root and flourish. Powered by an 18-volt battery, this tool features tines that can get in between different plantings; other tines counter oscillate to keep weeds from wrapping around and slowing things down. There's also a telescoping shaft you can position to the ideal length--a feature that helps protect your back from strain caused by continually bending over. Finally, comfortable grips and an adjustable auxiliary handle mean you can work longer without over-taxing muscles and joints.

This cultivator works really well for tilling up soil in our raised garden beds and one battery allows for two and a half beds on a charge (4'x8' beds) with digging down into the soil or about 30-45 minutes of work. Note that this is called a CULTIVATOR and not a tiller. Having just did some tilling with a gas powered tiller in the concrete that passes for soil in OK, I can say this tool wouldn't have dented that hardpack, but, that isn't why we got it. Just for kicks, I tried this tool in the harder packed soil in the yard, and it didn't hold up, but for churning up our gardens, this was perfect. In damp soil, keep an eye on the tines, especially after the battery has drained a bit, as the soil can clump up in the middle of the tines.
If you need to bust up sod, don't get this tool; if you are maintaining a garden, this will be your friend... use the right tool for the right job!
After 3 straight weekends of use, the adjustable handled cracked (see picture in the item photos). I'm 6'0" tall so have the extendable handle all the way out and the handle about 6 inches from the end. Apparently, the cultivator head is too heavy for the poor handle.
Another annoyance is the extendable handle, no matter how tight you make it, eventually will start to slide back into the lower half of the handle. Then you have to unscrew it, extend the handle, tighten it again, and continue. I finally extended it all the way then wrapped duct tape around the handle where they meet (again, see pic). Now it can't slip back into the lower half but it's a shame it has to be done in the first place.
I still like my little cultivator, especially since I got it for free (used Amazon points) but now I have to send in the handle for a replacement. I just wish build quality was better.
This is PERFECT for small, home garden use(s)...whether you plant veggies or flowers in a nicely tilled bed. It works the soil about 6" down, further if you push it in...up to about 8"....does an excellent job of mixing in compost, fresh manure and mulch. Loosens good sized weeds for easy pulling too! There is a bit of weight to it, but well balanced and not unwieldy at all. Since my two back surgeries four years ago, I needed something to help me keep gardening without putting strain on my back. This great little tool fits my needs perfectly.
If you are a big hobby gardener I think this tool would be a great addition to your arsenal of outdoor tools. Would buy again if this one ever dies....has been used for about 150+ hours since purchase...with no problems. Love it.
