Another wallet saver device

I first saw one of these in use when I had to call and electrician out for a power failure in my home years ago. All he did was go from one wall outlet to another checking each one with this device. Soon he found the offending outlet and all he had to do was reconnect the wires. This time he used the screws on the socket v. the stab in feature. In the 1970's stab in wall outlets were in general use and the wires had a bad habit of working out of the socket. No more of that with the wires all screwed down these days but if you have a dead section of wiring these testers can be a wallet saver in that you won't have to call out an electrician.

Failed to detect Hot/Neutral Reversal (critical!)

By chance, I ran across an outlet where the Hot and Neutral wires were reversed, BUT THIS DEVICE DID NOT DETECT IT! It reported no-ground, which was true, but it failed to report the much more serious problem!

I would never have noticed, but I installed a GFCI outlet, and the outlet refused to reset. I tried multiple outlets and none would reset. When I swapped the wires, I found the problem.

Now granted, it's very rare that wires get swapped. But when a tester doesn't give accurate results, what good is it?

I have had two of these for nearly 19 years and they both are working very well for me. I am not an electrician, so to be fair I don't use them all of the time, but I do use them.

What I like about this device is that it doesn't need separate batteries, it uses power from the circuit it is testing - IF power from the breaker is turned on for that circuit. It is safe to use too! Heck reading the results is as easy as plugging it in if the circuit is installed right side up.

Great little reliable tool.

Had an electrician come out to fix a T8 fluorescent ballast I had never done before and watched how he did it so I can now replace one myself. But he was testing a breaker that we often tripped when the microwave and the George Foreman grill were going and he used a tester at the outlets and fund one that was installed incorrectly in 1982. In fact he has never seen that type of particular outlet when it came time to replacing it. If you remember the old push the wire in quick and go type outlets you know what I am talking about. I laughed as I watched this young'un finally figure out how to remove it. Anyway I decided to test the rest of the house because he would test each and every outlet but for 10 times what this tester costs. Found another original outlet installed incorrectly in 1982 and it is fixed. The only thing I wish this one had was a GFCI button to test those. It is also good to know you got the right breaker off.

I was replacing an old ungrounded two prong receptacle in my apartment that went to my fridge, I kept the wires in the same orientation and checked with a multi-meter to check hot to ground, it turns out the hot and neutral were reversed and I had to power off the circuit again to redo the wiring. I always wanted to get one of these devices, small, affordable, and saves time. I wouldn't have had to redo the wiring if I had this device. As soon as I got the tester I went back to that outlet and confirmed everything was correct then ran across my apartment and checked all the outlets making sure they were all good. A few had the same problem, reverse hot and neutral, a few ungrounded, but most were fine and grounded. It helps to have a short extension cable while using this in tight spots where you can't plug the device straight in and be able to see the three leds.

Plug into an outlet to see if it’s properly grounded. The different sequence of lights indicate what’s going on. If the 2nd and 3rd are lit, you are properly grounded. Simple! Also, if you are into EARTHING, plugging your gadgets into a non-grounded outlet is futile. Product is solid, well made, brightly colored and easy to find in your mess of tools.
