I've been using Skype on my laptop for several years with and without headsets for business purpose and have wanted to get a phone like this but haven't found one that I liked enough to buy. This phone had the features I wanted and to top it all was in the price range I was willing to spend. The problem with forwarding or voicemail not kicking in for 60 seconds concerned me. I had read different reviews in different places saying that it was controlled in your Skype account not the phone. Great well I had it already set for 15 seconds then forward. I got the phone plugged it in and within minutes it was up and running. On the first test it didn't forward until after the 60 seconds. I double checked my account settings and sure enough 15 seconds. Now I was bummed and trying to figure out what to do when I needed to have it forward. I come back to the phone after a couple minutes and it said there was an update for the phone... I ran the update and problem fixed. Now I'm extremely happy with the phone!

UPDATE - 20 Feb 2012: A new update for this phone has rendered it practically useless for use with Skype it will connect to Skype and ring with an incoming call, however when you try to answer it the call will be lost. (I have no issue if I answer it on my laptop again, so it's not a network issue.) The phone has also reverted back to the full 1 minute ring time before forwarding! It has been this way for a couple weeks now! I constantly check for a new update. Hopefully they'll fix this soon and I'll remember to get on here and update the review.

I love the look and feel of this product and was pleased with the range and the voice quality, but shared a concern about the voicemail not working. Here is how I solved my voicemail problem: 1) Signed on to my Skype Account using my computer and deactivated the voicemail function. Following this I reactivated voicemail. 2) I recorded a new voice message on the GE 30591 to replace my old one that was recorded with my previous phone. Voila, things worked fine and I am happy. This saved me from returning the phone.

As you may know, GE Customer Service says the voicemail problem rests with Skype. They may be right, but their menu system on the phone is somewhat arcane, the user manual does not help, and they do not provide useful answers to those who experience this problem. Perhaps my experience will help others.

I bought this phone to replace an older Skype phone. Judging from the product description I thought I had found the perfect phone but....

a. On the PROS side... the voice quality is pretty good when used with SkypeOut calls... I will give it an "A"
b. On the CONS side.... voicemail does not work ("F"), contacts list does not download ("F"), creating new contacts returns the error "Failed" ("F"), customer service useless (I was told to return the phone, so another "F")

All in all, unless the firmware is fixed the phone is not fully functional, but it has potential, hence the title "Not there yet..."

We purchased this phone as part of a project attempting to save money on living costs. By paying the unlimited US & Canada skype subscription, which is only $2.99 a month, we were able to get rid of our phone bill and only pay for internet (we don't really watch TV, and what movies or TV we do watch, we do it online via Hulu plus or Netflix, so we didn't need to pay for cable either). The only downside to this money-saving system is that Skype flat-out says in their website that they can't make emergency phone calls, like 911, but we already had cell phones so we can always use those for emergency calls instead.

That said, this phone works perfectly for our purpose. The sound quality is excellent, you can't even tell that it's an internet-based call. We don't have a landline so I can't comment on its ability to call both, but I CAN tell you that the phone gives you the option to choose, within the menu, whether you want ALL phone calls to be skype calls, landline calls, or if you want the phone to ask you every time you make a call what kind of call you want it to be.

The reason I took away one star is because at first, my phone wouldn't make any calls at all and I couldn't understand why (the manual didn't mention this problem). I finally realized that it was because the defaul setting when you first get it is to make landline calls and we didn't have a land line. Now that we have the phone set to "skype only" calls. We don't have that problem. The only other issue is that the phone reminds you when you have a low credit balance on skype, which we do because we have a subscription instead. So we have to click "OK" on the low balance reminder message before every skype call, but it doesn't really bother us that much, it's just one extra click and then your call goes through.

We currently do not have a land-line phone and we solely rely on this phone and Skype. We subscribed to Skype In (online) number and use it as land-line. We also have a Skype account linked to this phone and it works perfectly.
As the other reviewer Sun Rae said, we have not had any issue with the voice-mail / answering machine. (We mainly use our mobile phones, so the voice-mail is not an issue for us.)

Input: 120VAC 60Hz 50mA, so the phone cannot be used in Europe or any country using 220V

UPDATE (1/20/13): I purchased this phone in October 2011 and it still works great. However, the battery life has shortened recently (the battery does not last more than 10 minutes), so I will have to order a new one.
