Unlike some of the cloud-based home automation products out there (Belkin Wemo, Philips Hue), the GE smart switch takes an approach of using your phone to make programming the switch fabulously easy while getting rid of the need for an Internet connection and remote cloud control.
I installed this into a standard 1-gang opening with dedicated control over a single light. The switch supports 3-way and 4-way operation for more complicated configurations but I didn’t need that (thankfully since that is more complicated to wire). I have experience installing switches like this where there is a built-in-microcontroller so I got it working in a few minutes on the first try. If your home has modern wiring, it’s straightforward:
In your wall box, there will be a white wire. Sometimes these are all just connected together and don’t connect to the light switch at all. You’ll have to tap into that white wire and run it to this switch using an included 4” jumper wire. You’ll attach ground as usual and then comes the one thing that requires some thought…you’ll probably have two black wires. One is going up to the light switch receptacle and the other is going to your power source. You’ll need to get those in the right order. Because of how my house is wired, I can usually tell the power source wire because it will be tapped into and run off to another light switch elsewhere in the house. Whereas the wires up to my light fixture are all by their lonesome.
Happily, the switch itself isn’t overly big (it’s smaller than the Wemo switches) so shoving it back into the receptacle wasn’t difficult.
The included instructions are pretty good after you study them a bit.
Once I powered on the breaker, the switch worked like a regular switch. It has a rocker-style operation and clicking “up” means “on” and clicking “down” means “off”. There is a pin-head sized blue LED to tell you that the switch is operational. The blue LED starts out flashing, indicating that it is not configured. From there, I launched the free “avi-on” app on my phone and it made me register for a cloud account (why, oh why???) and then very quickly discovered my light switch and took control of it. From there the blue LED becomes on solid and you can program up to 7 different schedules. The avi-on app uses a cool pie-chart view to show you hours of the day the switch will be on and which hours it will be off.
Once you configure it, you can pretty much forget about it, just like any other timer switch. In fact, you could uninstall the avi-on app because you’ll never need it again unless you want to change the config (or have the convenience of turning the light on/off from your Bluetooth device.)
Because you program this switch through an app, they are able to make it look like a regular light switch. So many other timer switches are covered in buttons or have LCD displays but this doesn’t need any of that. I love that it looks completely normal and yet is fully programmable.
If you’re within Bluetooth range, you can use your phone to turn the switch on or off (through the avi-on app). This is done using Bluetooth, not wifi, so you don’t need a working Internet connection. Unfortunately, launching the app takes a good 5-10 seconds, so it’s usually faster just to walk over to the switch. I prefer the Bluetooth approach to “cloud-based” products like Wemo and Hue because it’s one less security breach to worry about.
The switch has a countdown feature. You can configure it to “turn off the light in 45 minutes”. I don’t understand what use this is, but it’s there and it does work.
Overall, this is the best timer light switch I’ve used. I love that it looks and acts like a “normal” light switch. I love that it doesn’t need to connect to the Internet. And of course, I love that it is extremely easy to program and “just works”. I love it so much that after testing this, I quickly went out and bought the timer/dimmer version of the same switch for another use in my house.
SMART DIMMER: 2 STARS
I was so impressed with the timer switch that I went out and bought the timer/dimmer variant. Unfortunately, I'm quite unhappy with that product and Amazon won't let me write a separate review for that product. The Timer/Dimmer is essentially the same but it purports to be able to dim the light. Indeed, you can manually dim, and it works great. But when you use the timer function, all dimming is wipe away; the light always turns on at 100% brightness. That defeats the purpose as I wanted a dimmed light on a timer. For me, the timer/dimmer product only merits 2-stars. If it wasn't installed into my house, I'd immediately return it. $45 down the drain, bummer.
Thing to note is that these will only work with your phone if you are within bluetooth range, but that was ok with me and worked with what I had in plan.
I would also add that if you have multiples installed around the house, they do increase the range in which you can then control the devices.
All I was looking for was something I could control with my phone and setup schedules with. It does that just fine.
Enter this GE Bluetooth Smart Switch. Installation couldn't be more simple (mine was a single switch install; a multi-switch install is a bit more complicated and - I think - requires additional hardware). After turning off power to the switch at the main breaker panel I disconnected the three wires hooking up the Honeywell (line, load, and neutral) and then connected them to the GE switch (you can add a ground, as well). After checking that the switch worked (more, in a bit) I finished screwing down the switch and switch cover. That's it. Well, not really; there's a bit more....
GE was kind enough to provide a brown trim. So if white doesn't work, one just pops off the switch rocker cover and trim and replaces it with the brown one (which I did). Takes about 10 seconds. The installation directions address swapping the trim in Step 6 (the last step), but I think it's better as Step 1.
You can use the switch as a regular switch, but you'd be missing out on the BT functionality provided by the "Avi-on" app. I download the Android version only (so I can't speak to the iOS edition). While I understood the need for an app, I expected a simple BT "search and connect" protocol (i.e., I assumed the 4-digit code on the switch was going to be the pairing code). But the app never asked for a pairing code; instead, I was surprised to see a requirement to create an account (which I did, but still am not sure why as none of the app's or switch's functionality needs to depend on having an account. More on this, below).
Having downloaded and registered, the app searched for the switch and found it. The app is a fairly straight-forward app (as far as functions go), but it flows and is organized in a way that only engineers could love (in other words, it takes a few minutes to figure out the logic of the app). But in the end, it does what it is supposed to do. There is a simple "on-off" function, as well as various timer variations, and they all seem to work like they are supposed to.
UPDATE (12/15/15): We are "enjoying" this switch. It has been neat to be able to open the app while still in the car/driveway and turn on the front lights; handy when one comes home later than originally planned and find it's past sundown.
UPDATE (12/29/15; Subtracting 1 star): App is now having trouble recognizing the switch. Had to re-read instructions to see how to "reset" the BT function (hold down "off" paddle for 16 seconds until blue light on switch starts to flash). After 20 minutes of 2 different phones trying to connect with the switch, switch connected with app as I was set to reset. The app is also having difficulty connecting when we arrive in the driveway. The hope was to be able to sit in the car (less than 30 feet from switch) and have the ability to turn on the light if necessary. We have not been able to do that; in fact, we've had to walk up to the front door before the app would connect. If this remains the case it would be easier to unlock the door and manually turn on the light. So while the scheduling function remains in play and helpful, the switch's lack of dependability connecting with the app is a real problem. Not quite down to 2 stars, but getting close....
Speaking of logic, the installation instructions could be better. The largest of the switch install diagrams shows an installation where only the line and load wires are attached. A smaller diagram off to the right shows the neutral line wired in. What's the difference? Which is the better install? Never says. Speaking of "never says" there is a cool little blue light on the front of the switch. What's it for? And when should it be lit? Well, the instructions never say. After thinking about it for a while I came to this conclusion: when the switch is "off" (i.e., not powering the attached light) the blue light is "on" to show there is power to the switch. When the switch is "on" the blue light is "off" because the light being on shows there's power to the switch (with the light on there's no need for the blue light to be on; it would be redundant. But with the light off and the blue light off, one couldn't know if the switch is powered and thus able to connect to the app). My wife, the electrical engineer, disagrees. So perhaps I reversed "line" and "load." In the end, we're leaving it my way (after all, it makes sense to me and I installed it!), but I wish the install instructions said something about it. Speaking of "on" and "off," pressing the top of the switch turns the light on, pressing the bottom half of the switch turns the light off. It's not marked, so you just have to get used to it.
I had mentioned (above) that I wondered why an account was required to use the Avi-on app. In a sense, by having an account (and I guess some info being stored in the cloud) one potentially creates an exploitable vulnerability. If not, the app owner (and GE should do a better job of explaining what the account does, etc. Given that the app only controls this light switch and is not networked to anything else in the house my concerns are closer to curiosity than worry. If, on the other hand, I was going to use this app to control other items in my home (such as a door lock) then I think one would do well to research more (or better yet, insist that GE do a better job of explaining things). (Update: With regard to "creating an account" in the Avi-on I had hoped I was creating only a local account, but it seems this isn't the case. I did a quick look at the Avi-on page in the App Store and the Avi-on website and didn't quickly find the info on privacy/reason for account that I was looking for. I'm going to look further and encourage others to do the same (if only for peace of mind)). (Update: one improvement I would ask the Avi-on developers to consider is the ability to edit the name of the device being controlled. This switch shows as "GE In Wall Switch"; what if I add another one? Not easy to tell which light is what if both are named "GE In Wall Switch"; better if I could rename one "Back Door Light" and the other "Garage Door Light").
At a little over $40 the switch isn't cheap (and it's twice the cost of the Honeywell switch I replaced). But I don't think the price is unreasonable. It was easy to install, it seems to do the job (as a manual switch), and the app does what it says it will do. Could be a 5-star product, but the poor documentation, the less-than-intuitive app, the time it takes to load and connect to the switch when the app is opened, and the concerns I have as to why an account is required means the best I can rate this product is 4 stars. I don't plan on making this part of a "smart house" so the fact that this may or may not be compatible with other "standards" was not a concern for me. Similarly, others have noted that the BT range (at 10 ft) is less than one should expect of BT devices (30 ft or so). That may prove to be an issue down the road, but is not an issue for me at this point (UPDATE: I am getting about 30 ft before the app can no longer "see" the switch. For me, then, the BT function is living up to BT standards. So yes, it has become a problem...).
