Also, please read the instructions. Apparently you are supposed to have the surge protector on “off” and then plug it in. After that plugging in the appliances and THEN turning the surge protector on. I have never done this with others so there must be a reason for it.
The other thing I noticed is that the manufacturer has written in very tiny letters on the bottom flap of the box where it is very inconspicous, the California Prop comment about the material causing birth defects and cancers etc. this is NOT in the comments of the Amazon description at all. I believe that it is something that needs to be addressed by Amazon and updated in the description. I mention this for those people who do watch for these comments and have a concern about it.
All in all I think this is going to be a better surge protector for the bedroom. I had a wonderful one from Monoline (and will keep it) but the two long green “runway” lights on it prevented good sleep with it’s the constant glow.
Cord is long!
USB charging ports are super useful.
The actual plug sockets are very loose, to the point that nothing really stays solidly plugged in. Even a minor breeze or a mosquito’s breath will knock out a plug; it’s extremely frustrating. It’s so bad that I don’t even use the plugs at all - I only use the USB charging ports, which is a real pity.
The unit has a very bright blue LED light that illuminates when it’s on. This light is single handedly responsible for 99% of the light pollution in NYC - the remaining 1% being Times Square. Will never understand why it needs a light and why said light needs to be so bright and so... blue.
There is a high pitched electrical buzz/whine that occurs when you plug something into the USB ports. I bought this to mount to my headboard and charge my phone overnight, so the noise is right by my ears and it can be quite annoying when I'm trying to sleep. If you are sensitive to those types of noises, I wouldn't get this.
Also, the outlets do not rotate as you might guess from the picture, only the cover to the outlet. I suppose it would prevent dust from getting inside, but I originally thought you could change the orientation of the plugs, which would have been more useful.
Other than that it's a perfectly adequate power strip, but for the price I paid ($15) expected it to be better.
I highly recommend these - they have plenty of outlets and the USB connections are a plus. Also the manufacturer (GE) provides a $400,000 warranty for any connected equipment. Nice!
For my purposes though, it fell a bit short, most of that was my oversight though. For instance, I didn't notice it doesn't have a red light indicator to show if there's been a power surge, which I kind of rely on to know my devices are safe. Second, the open position on the outlets is parallel to the length of the surge protector, so if you have electronic devices with large connectors, you're going to lose a few of the outlets. The USB ports would likely make up for that.
