The GEFU Spiral Cutter SPIRALFIX is the indispensable kitchen tool for every vegetable fan. Based on the time-tested principle of the pencil sharpener, it transforms countless sorts of vegetables into delicious vegetable spaghetti, without effort and in no time at all. Using it is simple, convenient and extremely safe: Just open the folding lid, use the adjusting wheel to set the desired width of cut and place the vegetables in the box. Now close the lid, turn the crank handle (pressing down gently), and the desired vegetable spirals fall into the non-slip holding container. The long spirals can be produced with ease because two high-strength special knives made of blade steel work together perfectly in the box. The best part of it is that the two knives are able to cut the vegetables into spirals almost without any scraps.

The center peg doesn't do a good job holding many vegetables - especially those that are longer than they are wide.
I do like the small footprint. It is an easy gadget to have around for spirals once you get the hang of it and navigate its grip, size and core limitations with some produce. Basically every spiraling unit has their pros and cons. This is up there of the choices available. I'd encourage a purchaser to try out different models though depending on how often you're using it and what you're looking for. For instance, this doesn't core pears and apples like other horizontal models. If you pre-core those, they don't peg on the center nub and shift about unless you apply tremendous pressure making thicker slices and as I said, that's a lot of wrist action due to lost handle torque.
I kinda love it and it's kind of a pain in the patooty. My salads are prettier though (see my posted photos). My noodles and ruffles are more interesting in dishes. Uniformity of spirals varies depending on produce as I said above, however, I'm downing more produce and I even bought one for a diabetic child's parents who are monitoring carbs. I think it'd be super fun for kids even without dietary concerns. This unit is faster for that purpose than bigger 4 suction foot units. An added plus is the cutting edges are housed so little fingers are protected and they can join in the spiral fun. I believe that's important because kids tend to appreciate and consume foods they've had more interaction with in preparation (with supervision).
Special note: It's only designed in Germany. It's manufactured in China. Also, BPA free options still contain endocrine affecting EA and other additives. Even polyethylenes have their controversies. I beg you not to heat or reheat in your plastics to prevent leaching those additives into your foods. I hand-wash this unit and many others, despite microwave and dishwasher melt ratings, for instance.
The machine looks to be well made and sturdy. All cutting blades are contained within the machine. There is a rubber ring on the bottom so it does not slip on the counter. Because of my arthritic hands it was hard to push down and turn the crank on hard vegetables like potato, until I stood on my (one) step stool to get more leverage. Have not had any problem with turning since then. It is nice that the sliced vegetables are contained in the bottom cup. Clean the blades right away after using so you do not have to try to clean dried food off of the small, sharp blades
The spiral veggies are so darned cute! I turned a large radish for a 4 year old and she gobbled it right up. The shapes are just so appealing--and not just to children.
I have recommended this to all my family and friends.
I had previously gotten a vegematic machine, and was disappointed because it only worked well carrots, and maybe kale, but now I have a new appreciation for it.
