Editorial Reviews

Gene Autry - "The Singing Cowboy" - was truly one of the legends of the Western film genre, with his trusty horse Champion and trusted sidekick Frog Millhouse (Smiley Burnette). This terrific 5-disc set includes nine complete features from the ‘30s and ‘40s, many previously unavailable on DVD.

Also included is the entire 12-chapter Gene Autry serial The Phantom Empire, a 1935 science-fiction-Western cliffhanger in which Gene battles the denizens of the secret, ancient underground Kingdom of Murania, far below Radio Ranch! Plus exclusive interviews with Glen Campbell, Jane Withers, Eddy Arnold – and Gene Autry himself! (Approx. 14 hrs)

Disc One

MAN OF THE FRONTIER (1936) – Gene and Frog (Smiley Burnette) go undercover as ditch diggers to find out who has been causing all the "accidents" at a construction site. Perennial B-Western favorite Charles King appears as a henchman.

RIDE RANGER RIDE (1936) – Texas Ranger Gene goes undercover to protect an army wagon train that’s loaded with ammunition and winds up fighting Comanches. Silent star Monte Blue (Orphans of the Storm) is Chief Tavido.

THE OLD CORRAL (1936) – Sheriff Gene falls for the lovely witness to a murder (Irene Manning of Yankee Doodle Dandy). Supporting cast includes Smiley Burnette, Lon Chaney Jr.(The Wolf Man) – and a very young (and uncredited) Roy Rogers!

Disc Two

ROUND-UP TIME IN TEXAS (1937) - Gene and Frog wind up battling outlaws – and a tribe of angry natives – when they travel to South Africa to help Gene’s brother protect his diamond mine.

* YODELIN’ KID FROM PINE RIDGE (1937) – Gene gets in the middle of a turf war and winds up fighting cattle rustlers. Silent star Betty Bronson (Peter Pan) is the damsel in distress.

* BOOTS AND SADDLES (1937) – Gene tries to dissuade a visiting English heir (12-year-old Ronald Sinclair of A Christmas Carol) from selling the ranch he has inherited and winds up caught in a conflict with a rival rancher. Chris-Pin Martin, who played Pancho in the Cisco Kid movies, has a small role.

Disc Three

* MAN FROM MUSIC MOUNTAIN (1938) – Gene tries to stop unscrupulous land developers from swindling naïve ranchers out of the gold that lies beneath their land. Carol Hughes (Dale Arden in Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe) is the love interest.

* LOADED PISTOLS (1948) – Gene saves a young man (Russell Arms of The Man Who Came to Dinner) from being lynched for a crime he didn’t commit. Cast includes Barbara Britton (So Proudly We Hail), Chill Wills (The Alamo), Jack Holt (San Francisco)

RIDERS OF THE WHISTLING PINES (1949) – Gene tries to stop a gang of outlaws and winds up being framed for poisoning cattle. Among the bad guys are Douglas Dumbrille (A Day at the Races) and future Lone Ranger Clayton Moore!

Disc Four

THE PHANTOM EMPIRE

CHAPTER 1: THE SINGING COWBOY CHAPTER 2: THE THUNDER RIDERS CHAPTER 3: THE LIGHTNING CHAMBER CHAPTER 4: PHANTOM BROADCAST CHAPTER 5: BENEATH THE EARTH CHAPTER 6: DISASTER FROM THE SKIES

Movies are entertaining. Quality of film is fuzzy and in some instances will blur. It looks like a poor transfer from 16 mm film with no restoration.
