I moved to Japan about 10 months ago and I needed a textbook to learn the language. I settled on the second edition of Genki and I couldn't be happier with the decision. Working your way through the textbook (and workbook) require a lot of time and dedication. That's true of any textbook, but with Genki it's even more so because the authors don't hold your hand and the book is written with the assumption that you are serious about learning Japanese. Be warned, this is not a learn-Japanese-in-a-month style book, nor an EZ-Japanese style book. No shortcuts are taken here. If you are OK with that fact, then I can't recommend this book enough.

The book is divided into 2 sections: "conversation/grammar" and "reading/writing". I'll start with an overview of the conversation/grammar section, which comprises the bulk of the book.

The conversation section has 12 lessons. Each starts with a short dialog or two, then a list of about 50 vocabulary words, which are broken down by word type (e.g. noun, irregular verb, etc). After that comes the grammar section which introduces new conjugations, expressions and other grammar structures. Each grammar point is explained thoroughly, yet concisely, always with examples of typical usage, and oftentimes with more examples to elucidate corner cases or common mistakes.

At the end of the grammar section for the lesson, there is usually (always?) "culture notes" and "useful expressions" sections. There is much to be gleaned from both, though the "useful expressions" sections are usually outstanding and provide supplementary words and sentences on a variety of common topics, such as counting, classroom vocabulary, train station expressions and doctor office visits.

Finally, each lesson ends with about 10 pages of exercises.

I bought this after reading several reviews on several sites to ensure this would be the best text for self-study. No prior knowledge is needed, HOWEVER, you MUST be ready to ditch romaji RIGHT NOW. Sure, it is there for the beginning, but it is made clear that romaji is detrimental for learning, and it is true. From the first 2 chapters I have read, I can recommend this. If you are self-studying, there are instances where "Practice with a classmate" are made, and this is where you have to check yourself online to see if you did it right. Don't stress too much though because there are plenty of sites to practice, such as lang-8, a free site where you help Japanese people learn English and they help you with Japanese in terms of writing, reading and speaking.

The PDF for the work book can be found online so if you are tight on cash, I would just get the text. And find some native speakers online for help. Also, by from a different seller than just Amazon, because you can get a new copy for cheaper than list price!!

This Second Edition comes with a CD, updated lessons, simpler ways of explaining grammar, and much more. If your'e grasp on English grammar is poor, well you might need to dedicate more hours into grammar, because it is DIFFICULT if you don't know what certain things are.

As you already know, Japanese is a VERY difficult language: 3 "alphabets" completely different grammatical structure, implied context, omittance of topics in a sentence, etc. so when people say not to underestimate it, it's true. I understand if you love anime, I do too, but Japanese is not for anime. It is a gorgeous language that is worth your time and should not be attempted to be learned solely for anime or games. It is a culture of wonderful people and graceful words, and truly should be seen as it is. If you are really serious about Japanese, then look up what makes Japan what it is. Learn the culture, folklore, EVERYTHING, because it is such an amazing country:)

The first edition of the Genki volumes already came highly recommended for use by Universities, but they came with a handful of complaints as well. The second edition seems to to have corrected every single area of the textbook that used to be criticized.

As a beginner, I found the vocabulary and grammer for each chapter was always 100% relevant, efficient, and thorough to the stage of learning I was at. It enabled me to breeze through this book at an unprecedented rate. It's been just a few months since I started studying, but I already feel completely confident to move onto Genki 2; I have Genki 1 completely down-pat!

The only downside: The second edition of Genki 2 doesn't come out until this September! Guess I'll have to wait a little, but it'll be worth it for such a great edition.

EDIT: BUY THIS BOOK FROM THE JAPANESE AMAZON STORE, NOT THE AMERICAN ONE- YOU WILL SAVE A LOT OF MONEY.

Ive only just started using this book for the second half of my first year college Japanese. Even so, I have to rave about it!
The textbook and the separate workbook, both have their own MP3 cd's for listening/speaking comprehension. The lessons are straightforward and to the point, but if you get the workbook that goes along with this, you will soon find that the lessons really force you to USE the language. The cd's are awesome for getting used to hearing the language as well.

After using a different textbook for the first half of my Japanese course at a different college, I am half wishing I could go back and do the same course over but with this book instead. It gives you quick and to the point grammar explanations and then follows that up with practice sections to really help drill the content into you. The workbook that can be purchased with this, only helps strengthen that knowledge even further. Don't let the size of the workbook fool you either. It might be few in pages compared to some other workbooks, but its a definite treasure trove of useful study lessons! Probably the best study aid I have used for learning Japanese thus far.
