Image Editing has become a key element in the photographic workflow. Image editing tools, most notably Photoshop, are usually sophisticated and deep applications - and fairly expensive. The only open source tool in this market is the GIMP, which has developed into a powerful multiplatform system, running on Linux, as well as OS X and Windows.

This book has evolved from the classroom materials the author developed and used in courses and workshops on Image Editing with the GIMP. About the Author
Klaus Martin Goelker is an experienced GIMP user and author of GIMP 2, GIMP 2.6 and GIMP 2.8 for Photographers, all three of which have been published in German and English, the book on GIMP 2.6 also in Polish. A long-time architect, he now focuses his energy on web design, design, arts, and photography. He teaches courses on the basics of web design and digital imaging using GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, and Photoshop Elements. Klaus lives in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The Gimp is a very powerful program for image manipulation. This publication presents the information needed to get started using The Gimp. It includes a cd with the program and related material on it.The information is useful,up to date, and is presented in an easy to use format. I highly recommend both the book and the program. I can not imagine needing to buy an expensive program while this one is free. The program allows you to manipulate images using layers just like any expensive program. I did not give the book 5 stars because it is very poorly bound. I think I am going to break out the three hole punch and put it in a notebook. It is falling apart.I still recommend it, the information is great,the program is top shelf.If you are into digital photography, you will love this program. The book will get you started using it.

A beautifully-produced book with a wealth of useful information
for photographers who are interested in using the free, open-source
GIMP imaging program to edit their images, rather than spending
truckloads of money on other well-known commercial products (which
shall remain nameless in this review).

Packed full of images of astoundingly good quality, this is a very
high-quality publication, even though it is a paperback version.

I am not aware whether or not a hardback version is available, but,
considering the high quality of the materials employed in the production
of this paperback version, I would seriously question whether the inevitable
price difference would be worth it to buy a hardcover version.

Highly recommended for photographers and GIMP users of all levels, from
beginners to professionals.

Makes this rather convoluted and difficult program useful. I like the idea of open-source software, and a lot of it is really every bit as good as the commercial stuff it emulates. It's more powerful than Photoshop Elements, and easier to use than CS5, but not quite as powerful and versatile. I use Photoshop CS5, but it's way too expensive for most people. This is a good alternative.

This should be heavy on content, not beginner-friendly hand-holding installations. If you've installed anything in the last ten years, you can install this program. Move on.

Book arrived on earliest date. Condition is very good. CD containing software, .pdf of book and work along examples, plus various links included. The book is well set out, well written, adequately illustrated and covers additional image editing information (scanning, print set up, colour management), with links to various open source software plus information sites as well as the instruction relating to Gimp2. Date of publication is 2007. I chose to buy a used copy of the book and it was well worth the outlay although it refers to Gimp2 version 2.2.X. At date of writing this Dec 2016) the current version of Gimp2 is 2.8.16 but the book still holds relevance. It is understood there is an updated version of the publication available from Rockynook/Amazon. Gimp2 is a very good piece of software and allied to the various other open source software given mention in the book it is a serious rival to some very expensive applications.

Rarely do you find such a clearly and carefully written guide as this. it really is a gem. I found it far more informative than anything I have read elsewhere. Suffice to say that, as a retired social scientist with a very basic knowledge of optics and newcomer to digital photo editing, I found GIMP 2 for Photographers the bees knees, the real business. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to someone who can write so clearly and with such care for the reader. Its such a rare thing to find in a technical writer. Even his exposition of the sources and downloads is crystal clear and very carefully presented. Buy it, you will not be disapppointed.

Rather then being a detailed guide to photo-manipulation and enhancement, this is more a beginner's guide to The Gimp from a photographer's perspective. So, you get a detailed guide to installing the software and a lot of information on the various tools - what you don't get are detailed lessons on the more esoteric photo-manipulation techniques (eg using the channel-mixer to convert a colour photo to a great B&W image) - for this, you'd have to get a Photoshop book and then see if you can recreate the effects using The Gimp.

The style of writing is also a little bit tortured, being a translation from a German book.
