I mean, ugh... I hate writing this in the face of so much fanfare, but felt like I needed to get some frustration off my chest.

The good:
+ This book is incredibly compelling. I finished the entire thing on one 4-hour flight on 3 hours of sleep. She (or her ghostwriter) is a great storyteller.
+ It truly is inspiring to read about a type of success not born of traditional privilege or ambition - I hope this book gets a lot of other young women out there to kick-start their dreams.
+ I really appreciate that she didn't focus on gender at all - this wasn't a "girl power!" book so much as it was an "entrepreneur power!" book written by a girl.

The less good:
+ I had never heard of Nasty Gal before I picked this up. Never mind that I'm a fashion-oriented mid-20s female - I'll assume this is on me. Sophia seems to think her company is God's gift to Earth - I found her completely presumptuous both in her evaluation of her own brand equity, and hyperbolic in her descriptions of Nasty Gal as a "huge, explosive success" (I live and work in Silicon Valley, where nonprofits get $20M in funding annually easy and companies grow from 1 to 350 employees in two years - let's have a sense of scale here.)
+ There was a consistent thread of put-downs and humblebrags in here, which happen to be two stylistic choices I absolutely deplore. Sophia claims to have done poorly in school because of the rigid system and been fired from jobs because she didn't care enough to try (essentially excusing herself from blame). She disses investors/VC culture, MySpace (the original foundation for her business), "boring" people with 9-to-5s, eBay, and several poor unnamed employees of hers. I get it - she loves herself.

I love Sophia Amoruso for the empire that she's built. Like her, I'm also femail e-tail business owner, so she's idol. She found her passion in life, worked hard at (she is darn good at it, and built an incredible business that has been very much copied on the internet. That's her story. However, this is actually a self-improvement book for young girls who were ONCE LIKE Sophia - as a youngster, she was a typical American teenager, somewhat of an outcast, did what she could in her part-time jobs "just to get by". And in this book, she speaks to readers who were JUST like her when she was their age - she's speaking to the average Nasty Gal customer in this book.

I was looking for more business advice from this book - hoping for some advice specifically on the topic of ecommerce. But this book was more about her life and how to improve your character as a young woman in a male-dominated world. It was also mainly written for her fans - 100s of 1000s of young Nasty Gal customers who worship the ground she walks on and wanted to know her story. That was understandable. And it's a great book for youngters who are in need of guidance. But if you're a business person looking to crack into that brilliant mind of hers, this book does not satisfy. If you want to better understand how Amoruso built Nasty Gal, look up some of her interviews on YouTube.

When I first heard Sophia was writing #GIRLBOSS, I honestly thought, "Yeah, you're an intriguing person, but it seems a little early to write an advice book." After reading it, I believe Sophia wrote the book now for a couple of reasons. One, just to put into words how astonished she is at what she has learned and what she has accomplished. Two, she actually had a s*** ton of advice from some crazy work experiences and business decisions that she really wanted to pass on.

#GIRLBOSS tackles some of the contradictions people face in their professional and personal lives - buckle down and work hard but don't give in to "The Man," be considerate to customers and talk to the shy person hanging out in the corner but don't be afraid to fire people in a straight-forward way, eschew over-priced fashion must-haves while wearing Yves Saint Laurent platforms, ignore traditional business mindsets but educate yourself to make smart business decisions.

It's hard to navigate these types of contradictions, but Sophia's blend of a strong, irreverent voice mixed with heartfelt concern and well wishes for readers allows her to give advice in a straight-forward and humorous manner without coming across as preachy.

On one hand, I feel like the book targets younger readers, such as recent high school and college graduates, but even as a 30 year old professional, I found #GIRLBOSS a refreshing, entertaining read among the sea of dry personal development books and business reads. #GIRLBOSS gives me hope that tomorrow's generation of business leaders will approach their professional journeys with a surer footing of who they are and a relentless tenacity to match.

Most girls are taught from a very young age that being pretty is their primary goal in life. Even in today's modern society, they tend to be steered toward non-management positions in the business fields. #GIRLBOSS certainly challenges that stereotype and offers great advice for budding, young entrepreneurs in the making. The book is decidedly geared toward young women and girls, but I think there are many lessons that virtually anyone can take from Sophia Amoruso's experiences. She talks frankly and candidly about her experiences pre-success and post-success. Her storytelling is fascinating and fun and certainly much more relatable for young women than most self-help books. There's no stuffy language or masculine aphorisms. Instead, Amoruso offers a decidedly feminine, edgy, and ultimately helpful writing style that will appeal to an otherwise untapped market.

In addition to the advice dispensed by Amoruso, I'm always looking for other ways to improve my outlook and my personal and professional relationships. Around the same time I purchased #GIRLBOSS, I also picked up 21 Things You Should Give Up To Be Happy The name of the book might not do it justice, but it provides 21 supremely helpful tips on how to improve your happiness and improve your relationships along the way. After all, much of our happiness is tied to our work life and personal life, and this book delves into how exactly to achieve that happiness. The concept behind it is so simple, but the advice inside is worth every penny. It also pairs well with #GIRLBOSS if you're looking for a way to make actionable changes in your lifestyle that can improve your career trajectories.
