The design is certain to turn some heads, especially within the gaming community. While the bright orange is brigther than it looks in the pictures, it is not bothersome at all, just takes some getting used to - especially the WASD keys. The case of the laptop is a hard plastic, not particularly reflective and resistant to bending. Thus, the whole laptop feels very well built, with little bending or warping and no creaking or gaps left open. The lid is covered with black brushed aluminum and makes the laptop look and feel more premium to the touch.
You get 3 USB 3.0 ports, one of which is unconfortably close to the HDMI connector and may make connecting large USB troublesome is the HDMI cable is connected. The RJ-45 and USB-C port are on this side as well, and the RJ-45 features a clamp-like securing mechanism for ensuring the cable is not disconnected unadvertedly. On the right side you'll find the other 2 USB 3.0 ports, the memory card reader, combo-audio jack and kensington lock, with better distribution than the other side. THERE IS NO DVD DRIVE, though in this age of fast USB drives and DVD images that is less of a problem than in the past. The keyboard's response is satisfactory for a notebook keyboard and the red backlight can be dimmed and even turned off. Touchpad's response is fairly accurate, but not having separate buttons in the touchpad sometimes makes draging items with the buttons cumbersome. Moving on to the internals, there are 2 ocuppied RAM slots that allow for replacing RAM, in case an upgrade is required in the future, yet the CPU and GPU are soldered. The distribution of components is very neat and the cooling solution occupies far less space than one would expect from such an efficient system.
Performance wise, the included M2 drive (Sandisk Z-400 series) performed within its advertised specs, which falls behind better options like Samsung's 850 EVO in several tests. The secondary 7.2K RPM drive (HGST) is well within specs but was promptly replaced by a 1TB SSD, in what was a pretty easy procedure: a philips screwdriver was all that was needed to remove the bottom cover and replace the HDD. The i7 processor is fast and reliable and multi-core operations are concluded hastily, there is hardly any lag even at high loads. The 980M 8GB VRAM GPU handles most modern games in max settings at 1920x1080 and scores a powerful 9500 points for Graphics in 3DMark's Firestrike Standard. Right now, this is the fastest notebook-class single GPU that will surely be superseeded by more powerful 10-notebook-series. For now, it rightfully is the champion of GPUs.
In the Asus ROG GL502VY you won't find all the bells and whistles of other gaming laptops, such as dedicated macro keys and multi-colored keyboard backlight, but you get a great, light and less bulky package, well finished, with top of the line hardware and good thermal performance. The price for this model is on par with similar alternatives from other manufacturers, but if you like the design, hardware and decent portability of this laptop, this is the system for you.
Overall its a good computer. Battery lasting long enough for me, performance is good.
In case you had the same problem as I did, you need to get the cloning software (the function needed should be in the "free" range), leave the SSD UNINITIALIZED (cloning to a formatted drive would lead to not being able to set it as a boot drive), clone the files over, and, finally, set the SSD as boot drive.
The USB type-C port of this laptop does NOT have DisplayPort Alternative so you won't be able to fully use a dock with that option (not even the ASUS one Asus NB Accessory 90NB0DH1-P00010 AIO Docking Station White Retail... I did not know there were differences between USB-c ports, but now I do, the hard way.
I NEVER used the keyboard for a good 6 months maybe more because I sat it on a desk with an external keyboard. When I did decide to use the keyboard, it went out on me while my warranty was still active but I sought help from an outside computer expert and it turned out to be a dust issue so he cleaned the dust out and it worked for the duration of when I needed the keyboard which was probably about twice a week for 4 weeks. To sum up, I've probably used the keyboard maybe 15 times or less since the summer of 2016. Maybe about a month ago I needed to use the onboard keyboard again and lo and behold the keyboard went out again. This time it was not a dust issue and I believe an actual hardware issue but my warranty had expired by now. I tried every solution online and found no luck so I had to resort to calling customer service. After maybe a good 10 minutes of being on the phone all I'm getting is an estimate of 600-700 dollars for a repair in which the associate refused to explain where all those insane costs would go and that Asus would not even consider a defect. I'm not an unreasonable person asking for the newest laptop as compensation, but really Asus? 600 dollars for a keyboard replacement job that takes a month? I'm better off buying a new one. Oh another note, I rarely played graphic intensive games. I've done maybe 1 hour of Overwatch and the rest on League of Legends. My laptop has been kept in the best shape possible. I always kept it in a sleeve when transporting, never dropped, nothing. All I want is my keyboard fixed and I can't even get that for a decent price. If you are on the verge of buying this laptop for gaming be careful.
Edit: to reiterate, the heat felt is completely normal, as i7 processors are design to and do run at 60-80 degrees Celsius on all laptops. The sensation of heat near the fans (which is far away from the keyboard and does not detract from your experience, by the way) is just due to a lack of insulation on account of it being thin.
