I did make a couple of modifications before installing this unit. The wiring that came with the unit was just too short to be useful for me. I opened the back and soldered a new wire on top of the existing wires then cut the old wires off the small circuit board. I added several feet of landscape lighting wire. I also added some silicone to the nut/grommet where the wire exits the housing to help seal it from water intrusion.
I mounted this unit to the soffit area above my front walkway steps, then connected it to the landscape lighting I already had in place. I am impressed with how bright this little light is and how much area is lights up! It's almost too bright!
If it lasts half as long as they claim I will truly be impressed.
I took these pictures at about 6:30pm so it was almost dark out. Just a small point and shoot camera hand held, no flash used.
I will try and remember to update this.
The item came well packed
The glass bezel was loose, I could not tighten the screws neither
The thread did not go all the way through the housing, used a tap & die set so I could tighten the screws
The light is bright but definitely will not replace an 80W halogen bulb!!!
Think about it, your High Beams in your car are 65W !!!!
The unit draws 480 mA at 12Volt, thus the SMD is less than 6 Watt
Those SMD's / LED's can not be connected straight to the 12Volt
The current of those has to be limited
Thus they have to use a current limiter (aka LED Ballast, aka LED driver)
Another shortfall of LED/SMD technology is HEAT, thus that 10W LED needs to be mounted on a coolsink
From what I can measure, this light has been limited to approx. 6W
Maybe it overheated at full power, maybe it was a cost saving issue
All in all the light is not bad for the price and I have seen worse
As long as you do not expect it to be as bright as your headlights ...
Update 14 Nov 2017. I am not sure about their longevity claim of 50k hours of operation. I have 2 lights that died within a day of each other and both of these lights have even an excessive estimate of 3k hours of use since installed. These are all installed under cover and protected from direct exposure. I have 1 more that is flickering and probably on its last leg.
The beam is rather tightly focused, while I'd prefer a wider angle, but the price is right.
UPDATE -- Purchased for emergency 12V lighting, 2 months ago. Now outside Amazon return window.
First use lasted 15 minutes before failing DURING THE EMERGENCY.
........... never again.
**Update - I live in Ontario Canada and have used these for over a year. From +30 degrees Celsius to -30 these have preformed flawlessly. I did put silicon inside my connectors just to ensure moisture doesn't corrode the copper over time. I have several in the dirt and cedar mulch lighting up my gardens... and I Haven't had 1 defective unit yet.
that claims to have an 840 lumen output. Although this one claims over 900 lumens, it is obviously not as bright
as the other 840 lumen light. It also needs stronger solder connections within the fixture. I have had to break down 2 different
fixtures to re solder connections. I have also added hot glue and tied some knots inside the fixture to keep the wires from pulling out again.
