Skip using included driver disk search NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 Host Controller Drivers | Plugable. download Plugable PCI-e cards purchased 10/16/2012 and after are µPD720202 based and require the 3.0.23.0 driver package. These units will be presented in device manager with the VID/PID pictured here:Download and install . In less than five minutes you have USB 3.0 two ports, installed and running on yours laptop.

I purchased this really with a prayer not expecting much results. I have USB 2.0 ports and I am really just trying to get better performance knowing I'll never reach true 3.0 speeds. However, these speeds are just fine for me since my USB 2.0 ports move data at about 12MBps. Here are some real world stats:

4660MB / 47 secs = 99.14MBps Creating file on flash drive using TruCrypt
4660MB / 57 secs = 81.75MBps Copying created file to/from flash drive and local SSD

Installing:
I inserted the Express Card first and canceled the windows drivers install. I used the drivers provided on the CD installation disk. On the top left corner of the card (not shown in the picture) it said NECxx so I installed the drivers for NEC. The installation went perfect. You do have to wait about 30-60 secs to allow the device to be recognized. Also, when I first plugged in my flash drive it said the device might not work properly but then that message went away and everything was fine. This all was done without re-booting so I think it just took time for the drivers to be recognized by the OS.

My Computer Specs:
Make/model: Lenovo T60 (purchased in 2007!)
OS: Windows XP pro (all ms updates applied)
BIOS: AHCI mode (not compatible mode)

Important! - To get these speeds you must set your sata mode in your bios to AHCI. It cannot be in compatibility mode. In compatibility mode (i.e., old IDE usage) you will most likely get half these speeds (which is what I got using a different card in that mode). From what I found out this is because AHCI technology actually uses two IDE channels in a RAID configuration, thereby doubling your speed. Just as important - you cannot just switch between compatibility mode and AHCI mode without re-installing your OS. If you try to do this you will get a blue screen (also tried that). This is because the wrong drivers are loaded to be able for the OS to access the disk drive. You have to switch the mode and then re-install your OS providing the proper drivers during installation (or if your windows install disk comes with SATA/AHCI drivers already then the install will work like normal - at least it did for me)

I would like to point out some other good aspects to this express card:
- Low form factor allows me to keep it in my laptop. Models that stick out would have to be removed when I put my laptop in its carrying case.
- Pay attention to the space between the usb openings. Another express card I purchased had two usb slots but they were closer together. This did not allow me to plug two flash drives side by side because they bumped into each other. I could only use the second usb slot for something like a printer which had a usb cable (usb plug is smaller).
- Because of the "hide-away" design it also does not interfere with my existing usb 2.0 slot which is right next to my express card slot. The other express card I purchased extended out but also widened such that it rendered my existing usb 2.0 slot almost unusable. Just because I'm adding usb 3.0 slots I don't want to give up my usb 2.0 slot.
- A note about speeds. 5Gb/s speed equates to 625MB/s (megabytes not bits). At 100MB/s you can transfer a 4GB file (about the size of a dvd) in 40 seconds. Most SSD's and flash drives do not transfer data much faster than 100MB/s (at least I have not heard of any. please comment if I am wrong). In other words, the 5GB/s speeds of USB 3.0 is really built for the future when other hardware becomes faster. I have read forum posts where the person says a particular card or buss will only transfer up to 2.5Gb/s. I say big deal. It's still faster than the current hardware will support. Just food for thought.

I purchased two SanDisk 64GB flash drives and have them both plugged into this device at the same time. I get the above speeds roughly when copying from flashdrive1 to flashdrive2, or flashdrive to ssd, or ssd to flashdrive. Basically I now have 128GB of usable disk space to work with to backup files, hold files temporarily while I reformat my ssd, hold images larger than 4g vs. writing to a DVD, etc. It work well. For some reason the speeds can vary from 55MB/s to 100MB/s depending on what is going on in my computer. Also, I have quite a bit of software loaded on my machine and maybe other background processes are effecting the results. Don't know. I am happy with these results baring in mind this is to "upgrade" a very old T60 with usb20 ports to provide usb30 port functionality. I never expected to get actual usb30 speeds. The thing I really like about this express card is its low form factor. It is flush with my computer so it actually looks like the flash drives are plugged into my computer and not the express card. It doesn't block other usb20 port which is right next to the express card slot. I just leave the express card in my computer all the time now.

I purchased this card with some degree of concern after having read reviews indicating that it fit too tightly and that removing it might be an issue. In the case of my Dell Latitude E6410, I was able to insert it (yes, it's tight) and I was able to remove it without problem. I plan to leave it inserted permanently, but I did not want it to be stuck in there anyway.

Other than that, I connected my new Western Digital Passport 1.0 TB USB 3.0 hard drive to it and it works well. I can tell that file transfers are indeed much faster than with my previous WD 320 GB USB 2.0 Passport drive, but I have not done any quantitative measurements.

I have an old HP DV6870US. Based on the other reviews, I was worried the card would be slightly thick. It wasn't. Card fit perfect. I was worried I've have to go scrounging for NEC drivers. I didn't. Card works with Ubuntu 13.10 no extra drivers. Parted Magic 2013_11_11 also works with it.

But one other review was right about one thing: ExpressCard slot itself max speed is 2.5 Gbps (while USB 3.0 bursts to 5 Gbps with 4 Gbps sustainable). So was there any improvement? Sure was. Copying a large file through Samba on Ubuntu went from about 190 mbps under USB 2 to just under 280 mbps under this USB 3 card -- a 100 mbps improvement. Imaging with CloneZilla shows about 2.2 Gbps sustained. Was it worth the $13.98 I paid? Definitely!

Card also comes with a USB power cable of some sort (one end USB while other is small barrel type; not sure what it's for), a 3" driver CD (I didn't need it), and help card referencing the GMYLE website (I checked the site; seems kind of useless). The fact there's no documentation didn't turn me off as I just plugged it in and it worked.

Card sold by gigacity_amn but fulfilled by Amazon (I have Prime). Cost $13.98. Ordered it Sat before noon. It arrived Sunday just after lunch. I was flabbergasted. Talk about fast (wish it was always that quick).

This card is inexpensive and works. I think your max speed will have to do more with your system than with the card itself; however, it seems to be about 5 times faster than the USB 2 ports on my laptop. GMYLE's technical support is non-existant - I was having trouble finding a driver for this (no driver included with my purchase), and after emailing GMYLE, the only response I received was asking for my Amazon Order Number. Thanks for nothing, GMYLE.

Others have complained that the card is too tight and gets stuck in the card slot - while it did stick initially, after removing it and putting it in a couple of times, it seats well and ejects without any problem whatsoever.

Overall, it seems to be a decent card, despite the problems I had with drivers.
