Great Varied Songs

Format: MP3 Music

The band name and the cover art give little clue to the highly listenable tunes on Ratboys sophomore release GN. There's a fair share of fuzzed out crunchy guitar work, but all with strong melodies carried by Julia Steiner's sweetly sung lyrics. To her credit, and in spite of highly personal lyrics, she never tries to outsing the band. Steiner's voice carries the quieter spots and coasts along with the music as if it were another instrument. Control is a highlight that showcases the approach well - the guitar work on the track reminds me of Sebadoh's Ocean in a gloriously energetic lo-fi way with the riff repeated even in the quieter moments towards the end of the song. Other songs like Crying About the Planets and Dangerous Visions have more of a loping country/folk rhythm but are still punctuated with appropriate amounts of noise. Elvis Is in the Freezer is an ode to a lost pet with lovely rhymed couplets and anthemic guitar for the appropriate send off. GM is more stripped down but still creatively punctuated by horns and pedal steel. Overall, I could see comparisons to Big Thief, but this is more of a full band approach with equally shared duties. The music, including vocals, is incredibly tight, varied, and sounds like they have played for decades not years. Their strongest suit is showing appropriate restraint at the right moments, knowing just when to pull back a bit. Not being aware of the band previously this was a welcome blast of new music in an otherwise drab week of releases. Jump on board and enjoy the ride!
