Side note for 4 stars: It could use some kind if upper strap as well. The husband flapped the upper back latch buckle straight down and attached to a support beam, & tightened it so the seat wouldn't wobble back and fourth as much.
I gate checked the carseat with the travelmate attached for 2 of 3 flights. The last flight was 3.5 hrs and so I brought the setup on board so she could sleep in her cosco scenara carseat on the last leg home (we arrived at midnight). I put the travelmate in the overhead compartment.
How was I going to get her off the plane in her car seat without waking her up when the flight arrives at midnight? After eyeballing the aisles of the first two flights, I thought I'd be able to actually wheel her down the aisle of the 737 in the carseat+ travelmate, while she slept. Unfortunately, this wasn't possible due to the width of the aisle at row 1, and 6, which was too narrow (I checked when boarding the third leg). All I had was a backpack for carryon luggage, and I was only seated in row 8, so when the flight landed, I waited for my row (and several behind me) to deplane and grabbed the travelmate from the overhead compartment. Then, while she was sleeping in the car seat, I attached the travelmate. I put on my backpack so my hands were free, and I lifted her up while she was buckled in the carseat, (with the travelmate installed) with her facing forward, and carried her in front of me off the plane, sleeping. She weighs about 32 lbs, but not sure i'd be able to do it when she is bigger, especially if I had to carry her the entire length of the plane.... The carseat was super light, maybe 5 or 6 lbs so that helped too.
We got off the plane and I set her down and wheeled her down to baggage claim. She slept the whole time! Put the carseat into the car (with her still in it asleep), removed the travelmate, positioned her seat in the car and strapped it in, with her sleeping in it the carseat the whole time.
Not sure I recommend what I did unless you are very strong, or your kid + cosco scenara carseat + travelmate weighs less than 37 lbs. Definitely practice carrying your kid in the carseat+travelmate to make sure you can first. I think my husband could likely carry a heavier setup. Perhaps there are some planes that a narrow carseat could be wheeled down. I think I would have made it, except row 6 (bulkhead) and row 1 were too tight.
We have several carseats and when i purchased the travelmate i had intended on using it with our Recaro pro-ride which is listed as compatable. However, my husband nixed the idea since its our most expensive seat and wanted me to take our cheepo Evenflo (i don't even know the model) instead. This was a little bit of a problem since it didn't turn out to be compatable. But my handy husband spent 2 hours in the garage bolting a special cut extra wood piece to the travelmade platform to create a custom fit for resting the seat bottom on. It turned out perfect and allowed the carseat to snap into place with no effort. I practiced at home and could put the evenflo carseat onto the travelmade with one hand while wearing the baby.
When it came to travel day, I wore my baby in a front pack, had a backpack carryon, and pulled the toddler in his seat around the airport effortlessly. Plus when the toddler wanted to walk, i could put my 10 month old in the travelmate and let the toddler walk on a leash. Boarding the plane, i just simply unhooked the toddler seat one handed and lifted it up into the airplane seat (all while wearing my baby) and let my toddler climb on up. The travelmate then colapses small enough to go under the seat in front of us. Super fast and no stress about making people behind us wait.
I still don't recommend traveling alone with 2 kids - but if you have to, this is the way to go.
