Geoff Duncan experienced the 2020 election from a unique position, as Lt. Governor of the key swing state of Georgia. In the wake of the election as the days and weeks of recount after recount passed, Duncan became more and more disillusioned by the lack of any credible evidence of massive voter fraud as President Trump’s team of lawyers and talking heads insisted existed on a wide-scale basis.
When it became clear that all of these claims were fabrications designed to entice further division and somehow empower Mr. Trump to retain the Presidency, Duncan was the first elected Republican to speak the truth, and by doing so his political career was seemingly destroyed, or so it appeared.
But this book is about a whole lot more than a political odyssey. It tells the Geoff Duncan baseball player turned businessman story and perhaps more importantly provides a roadmap whereby the GOP can reclaim its place in the hearts and minds of Americans as best articulated by Ronald Reagan’s “Shining City on a Hill” vision of America.
Duncan the politician is a genuine conservative who has not abandoned the core principles of conservatism. He believes that government works best when it is small, and that many roles are best left to organizations like churches and charities.
In the book, Duncan outlines several examples of successes he has led in Georgia by empowering faith based and community based groups to solve difficult problems. But when injustice demands governmental action such as in the Ahmaud Arbery case, Geoff did not hesitate to move into action, bringing Democrats and Republicans together to take corrective legislative action. He discusses this case in detail in the book and explains how Arbery’s mother changed his mind and his heart on an important issue.
GOP 2.0 is a good read. As Republicans wake up every day to the reality of Trump’s Big Lie, this book is a great history lesson and a great warning of what happens when Americans put politics over policy, and when we resort to disinformation campaigns to try and hold on to power. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in history, politics, or the functioning of government.
