This turned out to be a fantastic purchase!
The fit into the cigarette lighter:
-Fit perfectly into our '96 Isuzu pickup.
-Took some adjustment to be able to fit it into our '96 Toyota Avalon. The product comes with an insert that explains how to file down the rubber strips on the jack (which does not void the warranty) to find a perfect fit. This took us about 10 minutes.
-With the rubber strips, it should fit really snugly in most vehicles. It takes some muscle to plug it in, so I don't see how it could flop or slide around very easily.
-A handy blue light lets you know when you have a solid connection, though I'm not a big fan of the light at night. I'll probably wind up covering it with a sticker.
The goose neck:
-The flexible goose neck is pretty firm and solidly constructed. It seems to stay where I put it with the iPhone on top.
-It isn't super long, which probably adds to the stability. However, if you have an already crowded center console, or an oddly placed cigarette lighter, you might have to play with the orientation of the neck to find a suitable position.
The cradle:
-In a word: fantastic. The side wings hold my iPhone snugly, and come with additional bumpers for smaller devices.
-I think the full rotation range of the cradle, allowing me to have the iPhone in portrait or landscape mode, sold me on this device. You can also tilt the screen to varying degrees up or down in landscape mode. Great!
The sound:
-I've read a lot of complaints about the sound of fm transmitters. I think this device provides wonderful sound. The volume is great. We ran into occasional static, but played with the stations we had tuned to until we found a station that was truly empty all over the island (we live on Maui).
-On that note of playing with the stations: I found it helpful to have another person in the car while trying to establish a good station, because to set it, you've got to set the radio and the transmitter. With the transmitter's display being on top of the device, it would be slightly cumbersome to adjust by myself while driving. All in all, though, not a big deal.
Hands-free calls:
-This feature is another one that sold me on this product. I can hear the caller just fine through the speakers, and the caller can hear me just as well. When a call comes in, whatever you're listening to just fades out, and then when you hang up it fades back in. Really nice!
Charging:
-I can handily charge my iPhone by plugging the usb charging cord into the device. Works great.
Overall, I'm so very pleased with my purchase. Factor in the very affordable price, and I'm thrilled! The quality is so much better than I expected for what I paid. There is also a 3 year limited warranty on the product. This was way better than getting a new car stereo, saving me a ton of money had I tried to get something that would get me all these features. I'm already recommending this to my friends!
So far, I've had the item for a week or so, and I have been thrilled with the performance, except for the supposed microphone that is installed. When i make a call, the quality doesn't appear to be any different to the person I'm calling. They told me I sound the same as when I used just my iphone, so I'm not sure if the microphone is installed and not working, or not really there. I'm not sure I can tell where it's supposed to be either...
Besides that, the sound quality is excellent. The unit does have an auto-off feature that gets annoying, (when you've turned the volume up all the way and then it turns off and i'm deafened by static...) but other than that I would highly recommend the product. Someone mentioned in one on the reviews that they thought the materials looked cheap. I second that, but everything seems to hold up just fine, and I can't complain.
this is probably the best FM transmitter on the market in this price range...
NOTE: less than a year after I bought it, and I don't even use it any more. It was great in the beginning, but the mount won't stay upright anymore, the clamp is broken and the auto-off feature on the unit (if audio isn't playing for 30 seconds) drives me nuts. I have changes my rating to 2 stars because I feel like it didn't hold up at all.
It has tons of potential, but it also leaves alot to be desired. It isn't as handy as the previous X2 design. It really should have a more accessible display and the ability to preprogram stations. I understand that the iPhone 4 requires a rubber case and therefore you have to have a flexible design, but this design is pretty herky and not terribly well thought out. It does the job but it isn't particularly elegant.
The flexible neck may as well be stiff, you can't actually bend it and expect it to stay in position. My old Belkin TuneBase FM Transmitter with ClearScan for iPod did a great job with it's flexible neck, but this one is pretty worthless. That product had it's own annoying tendencies as well, but overall was pretty well designed and worked well. I exchanged my first unit thinking that the neck was faulty, and the second unit was exactly the same. it simply doesn't hold it's shape enough and goes back to straight with the slightest perturbation. I used two thick wires and some black gorilla tape to reinforce the neck. Once it was reinforced it bent into position and was fine, but it's definitely a "Red Green Show" type redneck fix.
The socket that goes into the lighter port is ok but not great. if the neck is farther than 15 degrees from vertical it tips over when you take a sharp corner, even at 25mph. It works in my car, but I also improved it by scavenging parts from my old Belkin TuneBase FM Transmitter with ClearScan for iPod to improve the grip of the socket connector.
The sound is excellent. It is by far the loudest and clearest FM transmitter I've ever used. It isn't terribly well shielded from the iPhone's phone interference however. Because of this you hear alot of electronic "chatter" from the phone, especially in areas of low reception where the phone is trying to connect with multiple towers or reconnecting alot. My car stereo is also not well shielded, so it is doubly worse. If you have a decent car stereo this probably might not be as big a problem.
The handsfree design is good. No one has mentioned that I sound funny when using it, and it comes through the speaker with a decent volume.
Here's the deal. It does the job it's designed for but the parts are cheap and the design is second rate. I don't expect it to last forever, but for $30 it was barely worth it. Since the sound is excellent I'm willing to put up with the occasional interference. I'm handy enough to find reasonably classy workarounds for the more annoying physical problems, otherwise I would have returned it immediately.
The customer service probably saves this product from being a complete headache. Their customer service is second to none. In fact I don't think I've ever received customer service this responsive in my life outside of a 4 star restaurant. The idea that a cheap Chinese product could be this easy to return, and that the customer service agents could be so nice and responsive is unheard of. It's too bad it is somewhat wasted on a sub-par product. The company could go far if their product was better.
