What sets Mahoney's work apart from other books on the subject is his enthusiasm for helping people figure out not only what they can do now to have a happier retirement, but also how they can keep earning money well into their "golden years." His approach helps the reader hedge against unexpected events like the stock market crash in 2007. He also encourages readers to diversify and avoid relying on company pension plans and Social Security as a retirement safety net.
Having read a number of financial advice books, one of the things I appreciated about Mahoney's approach was that it did not assume I had thousands to invest. He seemed to understand the real finances that people with children and parents to take care of think about. I'm no longer concerned about robbing from my daughter's education fund to pay for my retirement or asking her to support me when I retire. He offers realistic advice on how to reduce debt now and how to determine what you will need for the future.
Mahoney's book is also written in language that almost anyone can understand. Instead of a dry discussion of stocks, bonds and annuities, he offers real world comparisons that the average person can understand. With taxes going up, his book helped me understand the tax advantages of an IRA and how I could invest now to save money on last year's taxes.
I highly recommend this book!
Let's face it, not all of us want to think about retirement but the age old expression is `to be forewarned is to be forearmed', especially when it comes to our finances! This book has shown me, that you can't really put off the inevitable and really do need to financially plan ahead.
A GPS for Your Retirement by Ken Mahoney, provides an excellent insight to everything you need to know about you financial future. The author manages to take you through the steps of investing in easy and methodical steps, without being dull. So if like me, you didn't really have a clue about investments, you will be very pleased to hear that I found this book very well written and easy to follow.
I actually found myself enjoying this book and feel much more confident about how to plan financially for my own retirement and make the most of the assets I have. To be honest you really cannot afford not to read this book.
Another reason I chose to read the book was that the author, Ken Mahoney, has more than 24 years of professional experience as a financial adviser, author, and speaker. I believe that in order to write, and teach about a subject you need considerable experience not only in the field, but teaching, speaking, and writing about it as well.
This is not a mundane numbers book. It shows how real life concerns about retirement, medical care, and debt planning don't have to be daunting if you just start somewhere. A GPS for Your Retirement is an interactive book that continually prompts you to ask yourself questions. I ended up using a highlighter to help me remember what parts of the book I needed to go back to. I also got out a one subject notebook and wrote down some notes on what I wanted my goals to be and ideas on how to get started.
I love that the book gives real and understandable explanations of Bonds, Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, 401ks, and so much more. It makes for a great reference book for your library. I now have a real place to start with retirement planning, a clear path on how to get there, and a realistic destination at the end of all this planning. The title and cover of the book align with the information relayed in it. Easy and great read for retirement planning.
Ken Mahoney's book, A GPS for Your Retirement first piqued my interest when he discussed serial retirement - the process of retiring, getting "itchy" to do something else, and then going back to work, to retire again, rinse and repeat; this is something that many of my friends and I had already discussed - we don't like sitting around doing nothing. Upon reading those words, I knew this was the book for me.
The chapters on probate and estate planning were a real eye opener, and showed me how to avoid the trials and tribulations that my family went through when my grandmother passed away. I will definitely be using the strategies suggested by Ken Mahoney in order to alleviate that headache for my family.
All in all, from picking up hobbies that generate income - something I already happily participate in, all the way through the revocable trusts, this book is a must read for anyone who wants to get started on planning for their retirement, believes they are ready to retire, or for someone who simply wants to put their mind more at ease that they aren't as behind as they thought they were.
