I gave it the 3-stars because of my experience with in in windws-7. It may work better on older OS's (XP or vista 32 bit systems) but it didn't work out of the box on win-7/64. There are no drivers for win-7...finally dug around and found some from other video caputre hardware that work.It does the video capture fairly well when i finally got it working. I have never been able to get the software to work, it installed, but errors with missing files when i try to run the program, and exits...So, there you have it...

This product worked for me out of the box on Windows 7 SP 1 64-bit. I think the secret is to download the best driver for it from the Internet. Unfortunately, the best driver is not the latest driver. It was written by eMPIA Technology, Inc. You can find it by searching for "eMPIA 5.2011.307.0" (the version number). It will be dated about March 7, 2011. The signal to noise ratio on the audio line could be a little better, although I doubt many people can discern it (I noticed it on a graph of the audio signal).

This did exactly what I wanted it to. I was able to get clips off my dvr, onto my computer. I then added them to my mp4 player. I also could record from live tv if I wanted. I only did short clips and they all worked fine. The only problem I had was getting my computer to stop running background programs- they seemed to interfere with the recording.

I want to add my 2 cents worth to the abundance of information provided by the other reviewers. Bottom line is that this device did work and I get a pretty fair quality recording from my DVR using the software provided with the unit...but read on. I didn't test with my VHS VCRs, as one won't load a tape and the other one hangs up the tape when it is ejected. But, I had a lot of problems to resolve before getting good results.

The device itself rates a score of 4, but due to all the hassle of making it work properly, I only rated it a 4 originally and almost went down to a 3. After a couple of days working with it, I changed that score to a 2. That is explained in my update of 12/19/12. The buyer must be willing and able to do some extra work to be able to capture video from an outside source. Good luck on finding a software application that will record in wide screen and allow for dual-layer DVDs. All of my testing was done with composite cables, not with an S-Video cable.

At first, I took the advice found in a couple of reviews not to install the software that came with the device. I found the newer drivers via the info provided by A Koziol. I did not try the drivers that were provided on the CD so I don't know if they work or rather, do not work as stated by other reviewers. I did find the GrabBee AV software and downloaded it. But, when I ran the software, I got an error message that it needed the input device and apparently just couldn't detect it. So, I didn't even have a chance to get into the options to change any settings to find the device.

After a couple of hours of searching and trying to find an answer, in desperation, I installed the capture software from the CD provided with my device, Honestech VHS to DVD 2.5 (Honest Tech).

I converted some old VHS tapes. I used a USB 3.0, worked perfect, however....Making changes to settings while recording caused my new computer with Windows 8 to crash with "blue screen of death". Never seen that before, but nothing was hurt.
