Let me start off by saying a am a complete scanning novice and have only owned 2 scanners in my life. The 396xt and the PSR800. With that being said, buying the 396xt was a big mistake. I got my PSR800 from the UPS man on Friday and man, what a great piece of equipment! It is everything I wanted the 396xt to be and more! I know, it's kind of ugly and cheap looking, but this thing really impressed me. The software installed with minor issues on my windows 7 64 laptop and then ran great. It took about half an hour to run all the updates and get the download the newest RR database (for free!) and I was off and running. I first messed around with the Set Location feature then moved on to the more detailed process of importing from the library with the software. I can't believe how easy it is to add and remove objects. I monitor the city police (Portland, OR) mostly but find that unlike the 396xt, I am not intimidated by trying other things. It sooooo easy! I have also been good with computers, but have almost zero radio knowledge. This scanner has allowed me to enjoy this hobby more then the 396xt. Not that the 396xt is a bad radio. It is just intimidating to program. I plan on using this radio when I get back on the road as a truck driver and can't wait to explore with the Set Location feature. If you are trying to decide between the 396xt and the PSR800, I highly recommend you go with the 800. It rocks!

--PS: if anyone is in the PDX metro area and has some advice on interesting freqs to monitor, please share!

Being a HAM operator for years, I understand receivers front-ends and this radio does not do well in rural areas. I think the radio would be fine, otherwise.
My complaint is with the seller and Amazon!
I returned the radio in original box and all items and was notified that I would be charged a "20%" restocking fee! In other words, a great policy to have to generate more money, from customers that are already unhappy. After 2 weeks and many telling me that they had not received my return, I furnished USPO documents proving such and then still it took the seller another 10 days to issue the refund, which was about 23% instead of %20.Contacted Amazon and they told me that their "A-to Z" guarantee would research my complaint and get it resolved. Just got email from Amazon telling me the case was closed because the refund had been given. True- BUT still Central Buy owes me additional money.

Not impressed with Central Buy OR Amazon

Pros: can decode APCO P-25 phase 2 systems. Can record audio. Computer interface. Strong audio from front panel speaker.

Cons: significant lack of front panel functionality (no keypad); no ability to make major programming changes without the use of a computer to upload/download files; computer software is not as flexible or easy to use as that of some other vendors (StarrSoft, BuTel); frequent communication errors with computer; frequent crashes of SD memory card after trying to upload; excessive power usage - drains a new set of AA batteries in 1 day of moderate use, performs even more poorly with rechargeables, even new NiMh ones.

Pros: rebandable, upgradeable, has the full radioreference database on-board, easy to load frequencies by location, TONS of advanced features, excellent sound quality, rugged, SAME weather alerts, RECORDS to SD!!!, V-Scanner allows many entire scanner configurations to be saved,

Cons: No numeric keypad, design is plain bordering on ugly, software is Windows only, reception is only O.K., default programming (by location) while easy is not optimal(more on that later), included antenna sucks

Bottom Line: This is one cool scanner! It stores the entire database from radioreference.com on the SD card. You can import on-device by ZIP, city, county, or system. That makes it REALLY easy to load the device for a particular area. Within minutes of opening the box I was listening to the trunked digital P25 system used in my area. The sound quality is great and the talk groups and such are displayed. However, as a HAM operator I do miss the numeric keypad. It makes the software pretty much MANDITORY to get 100% out of it. In fact, that combined with the included software being Windows only, will likely be a deal-breaker for some. (If so I'd urge you to check out the GRE PSR-500.) Even after grumbling though, I do also kind of like the MP3 style controls. It makes the device easier to manipulate if I'm multi-tasking.

Reception is O.K. Not as good on the 800Mhz band as the PRS-500 or the Pro-106. (Consistently a bar below either with weak signals being missed by the PSR-800. But the DAC and speaker on the PSR-800 sounds much better than the 500 or 106.

Also worth mentioning, the default on-device configuration by-location wizard is stupid. It should allow one to specify trunked vs. conventional imports. For example, when I imported my county it pulled in 4 trunked systems and 200 conventional frequencies, some hundreds of miles away, very few even in use. This made the device miss digital traffic I wanted to hear. That's why the PC software is manditory! Configuration of things like lockouts, LED & audible alerts, backlight, delay and such are all configurable per channel/talkgroup. But it's a REAL PAIN to do on-device. Some features like V-Scanner backups and firmware/library updates can ONLY be done from the PC application.

At the end of the day I'll say this- If you don't mind spending some time configuring it and you can live without the keypad, BUY THIS. It's fun to go somewhere and instantly be able to load relevant frequencies in a pinch! And once you get the hang of GREs 'object oriented' UI it's not hard to navigate.

If that doesn't sound like you, get the GRE PSR-500 or one of the Uniden digitals (the BCD-396XT is nice). It's an awesome radio as well. I don't recommend any of the RS radios. The radios themselves are fine. But they are just re-branded GRE's with fewer features, fewer firmware updates and poorer support.
