However, I found the book itself to contain a lot of errors, both typographical and substantive, that made the study process rather annoying. The information is intended to be review, so it's understandable that the authors don't go into great detail for most concepts. But many ideas were summarized so poorly that I couldn't understand what even the basic features of them were - stating the name of a theory without any further information about it, for example, so I used the book as jumping off point to do better research online (Wikipedia came in very handy in these spots). A few explanations were flat out wrong, which is frustrating as you then have to teach yourself incorrect information just to score better on the test. The list of key figures at the end of each chapter sometimes contained names that don't appear anywhere in the chapter, which happened infrequently enough for me to suspect that these were errors. I know this is a new version of the book, but I sure hope they hire a good copy editor for the next edition.
That being said, if your goal is just to score high on the test, going through this book, taking notes on it, and supplementing any unclear areas with Wikipedia will do fine. Don't do it all in two weeks - I spread my studying out over a few months - but you won't need much more than your basic psych education and this book to score well. I will say that in my opinion the practice questions in the book are unfortunately a good bit easier than the actual test questions, so I wouldn't use them exclusively. Therefore you may want to take the practice test provided by ETS online for a better benchmark of your performance.
I don’t know how I did on the test yet, but I learned a lot reading through this book, and even if I couldn’t recall the answer, I know that all the questions on the test were addressed in this book.
There will probably be an update soon, but the only misinformation I noticed is about the scoring. Up until the 2017/2018 test year you would be deducted 1/4 point for a wrong answer. This is no longer the case. There is no penalty for a wrong answer.
This is a decent (but not exhaustive) study guide for those who are not psych majors and have maybe taken a few psych classes at one point.
Even though I am familiar with most psych theories/concepts, I found myself having to do a lot of extra reading and watching videos to explain concepts that the book touched on. The book helped give me ideas of what to even look for, however, there were theories on the actual test that weren't mentioned in the book. I also found that the actual GRE didn't emphasize names of theorists quite as much as the book did, though the prominent ones were mentioned. The bulk of my studying came not from reading the chapters but using the study method of "overlearning" when I went back to see why I missed questions on the practice tests. For reference, I did about 2 weeks of active studying for the GRE, most of which came from this book, youtube (Khan, Crash Course), some Wikipedia, a psych GRE flashcard app, and a 5 day trial of Study.com
Top reviews from other countries
-It's very clear
-It has little review quizzes at the end of each Chapter to test your knowledge
-It's updated for the DSM-V (unlike the Princeton Review book)
-It covers the vast majority of the material on the exam
There is one minor limitation: Occasionally a concept will not be discussed in its entirety, or there may be minor inaccuracies. I always say that these review books are better thought of as detailed study guides rather than primary sources of information. As other reviewers have said, there's no substitute for class notes.
For best results, I suggest using this book in conjunction with another (I used the Princeton Review book, although I think there might be better options available) and your class notes. I also used the Brainscape GRE Psychology flashcard app, which is great, because it comes pre-loaded with a bunch of important concepts and definitions (saves a lot of time). However the app is not exhaustive in terms of content, and often suffers from inaccuracies or just plain wrong definitions, so be vigilant and create additional decks with your own cards for missing or improperly defined terms.
I really like this book. Aside from my own notes it was the most helpful aspect of my review. It's not perfect, but nothing ever is.
The book was delivered in good condition and is great for preparing for GRE subject test
