I purchased the smaller size pill pocket for tablets, as she is a very small dog taking small doses of small pills that had been cut into pieces. In the beginning, however, I still had quite a bit of trouble with compliance. If I put her dose in the center of the pill pocket as designed, she would chew on the pocket, discover the pill, eat the treat, and spit out the medicine. What I discovered is that, at least for my super small dog, a whole pill pocket is much too large, and really not necessary for such a small pill.
I now break off just enough of the pill pocket to cover the medicine, she swallows it without even attempting to chew it, and the medicine is down the hatch. I think I probably split each tablet sized pill pocket into about four pieces, quadrupling the number of doses per bag. We now use these Greenies to give her and my other dog their daily allergy medication, as well as their monthly trifexis (which they would otherwise give us a very hard time about). We have recently switched to using capsule sized greenies pill pockets in the same flavor and are getting a much better bargain using this same method.
At any rate, whether or not this "minimal coverage" method works for your dog, these pill pockets played a role in my dogs recovery after surgery and we now use them regularly. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for help in getting your dog to take his or her medication.
One thing I'd recommend is, if you can't decide what size to get definitely get the bigger ones--you can cut them in half if you have smaller pills and they're about the same size as the small ones, but way more for your money. Also, note that with the beef flavored ones, the main ingredient is actually chicken (which my dog is allergic to). The duck and pea allergy ones though are perfect!
