I do a LOT of outdoor cooking as well and have been itching for a wood pellet smoker for some time. This one met my highest expectations in spades, and I am so happy to review after a number of test cooks!
Big Plusses:
Basics...
* The grill comes incredibly well-packed in a heavy box. All components are professionally packaged for security and to avoid damage.
* Using the included concise and comprehensive manual, assembly is straightforward and about an hour if the directions are followed precisely.
* All parts, screws, and nuts are hermetically sealed and numbered for easy reference to the instructions. Z Grills includes a Phillips Head Screwdriver and two appropriate wrenches that are all you need to complete the entire assembly. (You can use a power drill to speed things along.)
* All components fit exactly as described and without any issues whatsoever. Again...follow the directions precisely and don't outthink the company!
* All the components are well-engineered and robust. Great construction and everything comes together without any major adjustments... In fact, the only adjustment was a slight shift of the cover to center it on installation..and as described in the instructions.
* Wheels are awesome and high-end. Superb.
* The one adjustment that is important is the standing heat thermometer on the interior left wall area. The instructions are for the pipe to be 14mm away from the wall for accurate measurement. Please see the picture attached to this review for the detailed location.
Operation:
* Following the directions for the first fire up completed the procedure exactly as described in the manual. This is a MUST procedure to activate everything properly. From that point, setting the temp dial will activate the auger as necessary based on the internal temperature.
* For searing, rather than cooking or smoking, just open the grill cover and turn the temp dial to its highest position. The pellets will feed and create HIGH heat for the sear. Works VERY well, and keep the cover open for searing!
* As suggested by some, wrapping the drain tray with aluminum foil will reduce the mess of grease droppings and make it far easier to clean.
* Cleaning the grill internally is straight-forward and keeps the grill in top shape.
Added accessories:
* The waterproof cover fits the grill precisely and is a great bonus. Make sure your grill has cooled before putting the cover on.
* The Wireless thermometer with two probes works exactly as intended. I downloaded the app from the iPhone App Store and paired it with the thermometer control without issue. The app works well and is also available for Android.
* Temperature tests showed a very near match between the set temp and the actual readings with an auxiliary oven thermometer.
Two small Niggles:
1. The description on Amazon of this grill states that it includes a fold-down table on the grill. It does NOT. Those are on some other Z Grills but not this one. Not really an issue, but I'm being precise
2. One of the questions asked on this Amazon page was "Can you empty the pellet hopper to switch pellets?" and Z Grills answered "Yes". No, you can't. There is no trap door on this model or another way to empty the pellets remaining below the safety grill in the hopper. If I'm wrong, Z Grills please leave a comment and I'll update this review.
I am extremely pleased with this pellet smoker. It is clearly as good or better than pellet grills from BIG name companies that cost double or triple what these sell for. Assembly can be done by anyone with the slightest knowledge of simple tools and with the clear directions in the included manual. The Manual itself is concise and very detailed for both assembly and operations. It's very well done!
My test cooks for this review included Cold Smoked Wild Salmon filets, Hot smoked salmon, a long cook full brisket followed by burnt ends from the Dekel. Tri-Tip seared after sous vide on the grill with excellent bark and finishing.
All came out better than expected with Applewood for the Salmon and Hickory for the Brisket.
All in all, I give this grill a VERY HIGH FIVE STARS. The construction is fantastic and works as designed without any issues. I expect to get a number of years out of this grill and excited to experiment with smoking and different pellets in my outdoor culinary activities. This is such a GREAT value at the price the company offers it for, especially compared to competitors' models. It's a no-brainer for me to give it my honest and VERY hearty recommendation! Kudos to the manufacturer! Bon Appetit!!

My issues are as follows:
I live in a high humidity environment. There is no easy way to remove unused pellets and they will absorb moisture if left in the bin. My solution has been to try and gauge how many I’m going to use so there are little to none left in the bin when I’m done cooking. That is labor intensive, if you mis-judge and don’t put in enough pellets, you will lose your flame. Too many and you may be running your grill for a while to get them out of the auger. A simple latch on the bottom of the bin would solve this.
It burns a LOT of pellets. You will go through more than half of a 20 pound bag smoking a rack of ribs. If you cook a lot, it gets expensive to operate. My pellet cost is averaging about $10 - $12 per use. I wish it used electricity to heat and pellets just for smoke, it would be much more economical.
It’s a PIA to clean after each use. You have to brush the grill and remove it. You then have to remove the grease tray and replace the aluminum foil. You then have to use a shop vac to suck out all the pellet dust. You then have to put in new foil and reassemble it. Figure on ten minutes to clean after each use. Use gloves or you will get grease everywhere.
Finally, I can’t stress how important it is to use foil to cover the tray under the grates AND in the grease bucket. It’s an absolute mess if you don’t. It will attract bugs and rats if you don’t clean it after each use.
That said, I’m happy with my purchase. But I can see a lazy person having real problems if they don’t maintain it.

I have read that you are supposed to remove unused pellets after you are done. If that is the case, the mechanism to clean out the hopper is non existent. You have to remove four small screws to remove the auger guard after each use? I am probably just going to leave the guard off. Unless someone else has a better suggestion.
The directions showed a three step process for installation. While it wasn’t three steps, not to bad.
Overall you unit was effective in maintaining temperature control with 15 degrees and intuitive to use. So overall I would recommend it.
