1) use a small thin pocket knife or flat head screwdriver to carefully pry out the old membrane from the middle side. The caution is you need a "thin" tool and need to be careful not to scratch the faucet side. It doesn't matter what you do to the old membrane.
2) use a cotton swap or toothpick and clean out any debris.
3) There appeared to be some plumber's silicone over the internal switches under the membrane. In my case this was badly yellowed and sticky. I cleaned up the deteriorated stuff with a wet paper towel and coated lightly with some new silicone.
4) Snap in the new membrane...Done!
At a list price of $36 Grohe should be charged with price gouging. At $20 with shipping from this Amazon merchant I can't say that I'm happy but it's better than replacing the entire spray head for $100.
Before I purchased this I contacted Grohe asking about their "Lifetime Warranty". This membrane deteriorated likely from its contact with water and dish soap. Hmmm...in a kitchen...go figure!. In full disclosure this fixture has been in my kitchen for 12 years so this isn't a yearly replacement event but still the initial Grohe price was painful.
I got this response...
The warranty covers manufactures defects. We do not cover these parts under Grohe’s warranty; warranties do not cover normal “wear and tear.”
In summary the material of this part doesn't hold up to its intended use but the Grohe warranty doesn't cover it and Grohe prices their replacement parts accordingly for more profit.
After a lot of searching I found what I thought would be the right part.
And it was!
This part replaced a worn, dirty and perforated flow selector.
It arrived early and was very reasonably priced considering that a whole new handle would have been over $100.
This part snapped in and makes a HUGE difference.
It is like new , because it is.
Part was packaged in OEM [ original equipment manufacturer ] packaging and there were no issues with the quality of the part.
As I say the seller got me this part earlier than I expected and followed up with an email in a non-intrusive way to make sure I was satisfied.
I am posting photos of my faucet, keep in mind while yours may look different, the selector membrane is probably used on many models.
I am sorry I do not have the measurements, I'll try to get those up later.
But for now the photos ought to help.
One is of the back base of the faucet and it says
Made in Germany
