UPDATE: I've used this press 10+ times since purchasing, and it has been nothing but wonderful. The only super-minor thing is that after washing, water must get in the handle, and the rubber sleeve over the handle slides around. After cleaning and drying it overnight, I applied some super glue, and its absolutely perfect now. Still would advise this product to anyone.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: The downside of French presses is that they break. So I have had more than a few. The Grosche York is better quality than some. Good qualities: 1) the glass is sturdy; one (famous) brand uses glass so fragile you don't want to breathe on it for fear of breaking. 2) not only is the filter stainless steel, the screw mechanism that holds the plunger together is also steel; some brands have the screw mechanism made out of plastic. 3) a review of a different Grosche coffee press had me worried as it said the exterior metal started to rust almost immediately; I took a chance because this one was cheap, and am happy to report (UPDATED) no rusting after two months of daily use.
UPDATE FEB 2015: Used almost daily for two and a half years, it's still going strong.
So great product at a great price.
- Makes more than two mugs of coffee per press
- Durable thermal glass construction (thicker than my Bodum)
- Filter appears to be no different than a Bodum
- Very affordable
- The lid is plastic and doesn't feel super solid
- Instructions recommend not using a dishwasher
I was very disappointed, because this press makes amazing coffee. So, I returned this unit and bought the GROSCHE LISBON French press (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MG4AF8/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00). Please see my review there, because these French presses make outstanding coffee.
If the base of this unit hadn't broken, I would have given this unit 5 stars. Maybe I got a defective one. Anyway, the Grosche Lisbon worked out better for me, because it pops right into the microwave, so I don't have to boil water in advance.
Looks sophisticated and contemporary on my counter (better than other brands in my opinion)
Construction is good for the price
All metal construction in the handle and in the movable parts
This size can make coffee for more than one person (I just use less water for one)
Plastic Lid that I hold with my thumb when I pour (it didn't fall out, just feels safer. For the price I can't complain)
This was my first french press so I researched them for weeks before I made a purchase. Scoured Amazon, other online reviews and articles, talked to friends who work for local coffee shops (I like the research process!) and finally decided to give this one a try. I also tested out a few Bodum models at Starbucks (they use them and/or sell them - the Chambord, Brazil and Kenya) and they were nice but nothing to write home about. As I researched it seemed that most people liked the Bodums and Grosche brand better than many others (in this price range) and I liked the look of the Grosche so I chose to head that route. I really like the look of the Grosche Madrid and Rome but each of those options were at least twice as much as the York. I looked at the Grosche Libson because the price was similar. I actually liked the look of it better than the York from the pictures but it had an all glass handle and it didn't sound like that particular feature would hold up well.
Ultimately, I am very happy with this purchase. Compared to the Bodums I really like the look of the Grosche brand (just as I thought i would). Functionally, the glass in this french press seems as sturdy or sturdier than some others I have seen. I like that all the moving parts except the spinning plastic top with a second filter, are metal.Read more ›
