I've been looking for the best cup of coffee in the backcountry for years now. I've used everything, from the drip styles that are kind of similar to this, to jetboil french presses and the like. While those options are far and away better than the instant coffee I began my backpacking career with, they still leave a lot to be desired in terms of ease of use and size. Enter the GSI Coffee Rocket.

I'd heard good things about this little guy. At an extremely affordable price, it comes in at one of the cheaper coffee maker options out there. It's also one of the lighter and more packable. I currently keep mine in my mini electric kettle because this thing is so good, I use it at home. When it comes time for coffee, simple take out the filter piece from the funnel, fill the filter with coffee, fold out the wings on the tripod base of the filter, and place it on top of the cup you wish to use. Then just pour hot water into the funnel and in literally 2 minutes, you have a fresh and delicious cup of coffee! Cleanup is a breeze, just empty the coffee grounds out of the filter and rinse the thing out. The filter is stainless steel with tiny laser cut holes, so it's durable and easy to clean.

This is the last back country coffee maker you'll ever need, and if you are like me, it may just replace your daily coffee maker.

Easy-peasy, great-tasting coffee. Cleanup and water conservation can be at odds when trying to “leave no trace.” I carry a 1 qt ZipLock bag with water in it to swish out the
Coffee Rocket—I just let the grounds collect in the bag, and the “rocket” just gets a coffee rinse. When I come to a place where I can discard the grounds, I rinse and refill the bag, and start all over again. And yes, I know that coffee grounds are biodegradable—and probably good for the environment—and I don’t have a problem with simply covering them with dirt.

While this "coffee maker" does the job, its limited. For anyone who enjoys coffee enough to pack something to make a cup outdoors, you probably will want more than one 8oz cup at a time. The GSI Coffee Rocket is well made and does have a nicely finished coffee basket, but you will need to ensure that you have your grounds correct. If the grounds are too fine, the water seems to pack them and makes for a very slow drip. If the grounds are too course, the water runs right through and you can end up with a weak cup of coffee. Also, care needs to be taken when removing the rocket from your cup after brewing. While the entire unit fits tightly together, after brewing DO NOT LIFT FROM THE FUNNEL. The basket will come out of the leg base and up with the funnel, and you will end up with quite a bit of grounds in your coffee. GSI could add some threading to the basket and base to prevent this, but that is currently not the design.

Ok, here's the deal, don't put too much coffee grounds in this thing or it will simply drip, one drip at a time, into your cup. Test it out at home a few times so you know the amount to put in. Oh and don't pack the coffee in there, it is not an espresso shot, there is no pressure, only gravity, forcing the water down through. Once you figure all this out, it is great. I've used it for a full season of backpacking and love it. Fits right inside the GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker Mug for a complete coffee system so to speak.

I bought this because I hate instant coffee. Boiling water is easy no matter what my camping situation is so I wanted something lightweight, trash-free, simple, cleanable, and reusable I could use for backpacking. This little guy has been perfect. The fact that it fits perfectly into a GSI mug makes me want to give it a 6th star. The one thing I warn people about is a) pay attention to where you balance the “wings” of the rocket when placing it on your mug. I haven’t tipped it over yet but it seems a bit top heavy when it’s not directly centered. And b) grind your own beans. Store bought grounds are super fine and slow down the drip rate of this considerably. All in all, this was a cheap and fantastic purchase.

Slow drip rate

I like how this product is cleaner than other drip methods I’ve used. However, it takes forever to get coffee. I took it and used it while winter camping and the grounds just get packed. I use regular store bought coffee grounds. I’ll have to test it out on other coffee, but the one I typically used took so long my coffee was freezing up by the time there was enough to sip on. If you grind your own coffee I recommend this since you can play with how fine your coffee would be. If you don’t, I recommend looking at other methods of getting your coffee.

I love this coffee rocket and use it several times per week. I feel that the next version should increase the size of the basket because who drinks 8oz of coffee? I would also love to see perc time improve. I’ve noticed with a finer grind, by the time the water has made it through the coffee rocket, the coffee is already cooling off, in the winter. Again, awesome V1 but improvements would definitely have me pulling out my wallet.
