A strange phenomenon was first discovered at University of British Columbia ski club touring camps in the 1960s. While students carrying bowls or more standard eating vessels received regular portions, those clever few who were using a simple 2 cup measuring cup typically received much larger portions from the servers in the communal meal line. Soon, a few daring students were experimenting with 4 cup measuring cups and found the results to be the same: larger portions. Thus, the original fairshare cup was born. Now nearly 50 years and several innovations later, GSI Outdoors has developed the FairShare Mug II, with insulating sleeve, compacting handle and a new lid that allows mugs to stack when stored, assuring that a whole new generation would receive their fair share too. The FairShare Mug II has the capability of nesting the Infinity Backpacker Mug (not included). Product includes a 32 fl. oz. clear polypropylene mug with graduations, an insulated sleeve with collapsible handle and a screw-on lid.

Great bowl, bad Amazon price

I won't degrade my product review because of the price on Amazon but let me prefix this review by saying the MSRP is only $10.95... Amazon currently has this 'on sale' at $14.95 but if you go to GSI or REI or any other online retailer you can get the MSRP price. Just be aware Amazon had free shipping so maybe it's worth it.
Anyways, this 'mug' is perfect for winter camping and rehydrating your dehydrated meals. I needed a screw-top bowl and it is so damn hard to find one that I landed on this product by accident. It's a 'mug' but it's more like a deep bowl. It's 4 cups of plastic awesome and there's no way, not even in my most dire craving, would I ever be able to drink that much hot chocolate. So a bowl it is. Got it? Good.
The handle has three holes which make it good attachment points but it slightly flimsy. It would hold a full 'mug' of water fine but I'm just saying it could be something you may expect to fail 5 years down the road. I'm thinking of sawing it off so it will fit in my 1.8L winter camping pot but the handle makes it very handy for scooping snow for melting or scooping your share (ahhhh, get it, 'fair share') from the communal cook pot at base camp. I see some people with neoprene sleeves on these but for the life of me can't find them myself. Maybe someone could point me in the right direction?
Anyways, solid purchase. And the GSI mug fits in here too for nesting purposes.

My new favorite camping and backpacking dishware

First thing's first. These things are more like deep bowls than mugs. Note how much volume they hold. They are wider and shorter than a nalgene and hold the same volume. This is not a mug for making a cup of tea.

Once you understand how big these are, you realize their usefullness. You can make oatmeal for multiple people in one mug. You can make a whole Mountain House meal in one mug (anyone else hate stirring in the bag and getting their spork/hand filthy?). They work great for pancakes when car camping (add mix, add water, screw on lid, shake, pour). I also use them with the GSI coffee filter holder to make morning coffee. Neither of mine have leaked at all.

On backpacking trips, they make great storage for small gear items in your pack.

They cleanup great in the dishwater and seem very durable. Mine have been dropped on all sorts of surfaces and show only small scuffs.

All in all, these were exactly what I wanted. The only thing that could make these better would be if they were made of a better insulating material so that the outside didn't get quite as hot. Make than change and these get a 5th star.

More than just a mug!

I purchased several of these mugs years ago when they first came to market. Since then, they have not only been a staple in our camping supplies, but with our military sons. They'll hold a "brick" of Ramen very nicely and fit well in a microwave aboard ship -- great for those times when the regular fare isn't up to par! And the lid ensures the meal gets to its destination even in rough seas. It may seem too large for backpacking, but it isn't. You can pack a day's meals inside the cup; thus, it takes up almost no room at all. Finally, as designed, it is great for the chow line -- fill up this baby and you won't go away hungry. Very durable; never had one crack or leak.

Love this as my only mess kit dish!

I can fit my hand in it easily for cleaning, and the lid screws on securely to keep fluid from leaking out. Handy as a sleeping bag warmer on cold nights. It holds a lot of food, so unless you are super hungry, do not fill it up! There are measurement marks on it, so you can better judge how much water or other ingredients you are using for a recipe. Handle has gaps in it that caribiners can fit through so you can attach it to the outside of your pack, or anywhere else you want to hang it that your caribiner will fit on. I camp roughly 10 times a year, and this item is used at every camp. Larger food items, like pancakes or bacon can be cut or folded to fit in it, but it is ideal for rehydrated meals, oatmeal, soup, mixed veggies, salad, etc. that isn't long and somewhat stiff like a steak. It works great when meat is cut into small pieces, however. Of course, I use it for hot and cold drinks as well; coffee, orange juice, water - you name it.

Great backpacking mug with lid

Some experienced backpacking friends had these mugs on a trip, so I had to get one for my backpacking arsenal. It's lightweight, large, but I can pack things in it. Some people might not like how big it is, but I just pack things into it so it doesn't seem like it's taking up that much space. Has a screw top lid so liquids cannot escape if you don't want them to. And the handle has a hole in the side that you can attach a carabener to. I use it for my drinks, soups, freeze dried meals, to store things while trekking, etc. It doesn't tip over easily and I like the clear base so I can see what's in it. Easy to clean. One of my favorite backpacking items.

Good for the trail and the office.

I love this mug.Although I originally bought it for camping, I find myself using it almost every day at the office. It's durable, cheap, and deep enough for me to reheat leftovers at work in the microwave without worrying they'll splatter. The handle lets you take your food out of the microwave without burning your hands. It's not 100% leak proof, but so long as you don't fill it to the top, screw the lid on well, and put it in your bag so that it's securely upright, you shouldn't experience leaks. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it retains heat- I made oatmeal one morning, put it in my mug, put my mug in my pack, and hit the trail. When I ate two hours later my oatmeal was still warm. It also washes very easily, unlike many of my plastic food containers, which seem to retain a greasy film no matter how thoroughly they're washed.

It leaks a little

Sadly, not waterproof. I learned this the hard way. I filled it with a freeze dried dinner, added water, and started shaking. Not a good result. So, if you want a lid to keep from dumping ALL you dinner, this is OK. Just don't expect it to not leak.

Some complain that the handle MIGHT break. I find the handle a pain wihe packing, but is seems strong enough to me.

More often than not, if I'm on a short trip, I just bring a Mountain House and eat out of the pouch, or add dinner to water and eat out of the pot.
