Dove però le cose cominciano seriamente a vacillare, secondo la mia modestissima opinione, è nella caratterizzazione dei personaggi, assolutamente generici e prive dei template che caratterizzano la produzione più recente della Terza Edizione e nella (per me) insopportabile, lunghissima, disquisizione sulla magia dei pellerossa, con tanto di grimorio, un pippone che occupa a conti fatti quasi un terzo del volume!
Intendiamoci, capisco che si voglia parlare del misticismo indiano allo scopo di creare un'atmosfera ma - santa miseria! - vorrei proprio vedere chi è così ansioso di giocare un fantasy ambientato nel Vecchio West o meglio: ci sono già fior fiore di giochi ambientati nel "Weird West" (editi ANCHE dalla SJGames e riproposti su Amazon) per perdere tutto questo tempo e spazio per un aspetto assolutamente marginale in un gioco che voglia riproporre le atmosfere dei classici di John Ford e John Wayne.
Tra l'altro, tutta la parte concernente i popoli rossi è infarcita di tanto e tale buonismo politicamente corretto da far davvero venire il mal di stomaco!
Altro punto che sinceramente NON mi è piaciuto, è la lunga dissertazione sul periodo dell'apertura della Frontiera.
Posso capire che sia interessante dal punto di vista storico/antropologico ma vorrei vedere quanti giocatori, acquistando un manuale intitolato Old West, anziché di banditi, cowboy, sceriffi, indiani e diligenze vorrebbe dilettarsi nelle spedizioni di fine '700/inizio '800 verso gli Appalachi o le Montagne Rocciose.
Capisco che anche dal punto di vista cinematografico ci sia stato un certo rinnovato interesse per questo periodo storico ma ludicamente parlando, non so quanto possa essere davvero invitante.
Ovviamente è il mio personalissimo punto di vista, sia ben inteso, ma mi aspetto altro, quando prendo in mano un libro sul West!
Per contro, tutto questo spazio "sciupato" fa sì che non si sia potuto approfondire assolutamente il discorso delle "leggende" del West, se non come trafiletti a latere e a grandissime linee.
Anche qui, NON c'è UN personaggio leggendario del Selvaggio West che sia stato riportato con tutte le sue statistiche, in modo anche da fornire un esempio: solo una descrizione a grandi linee del personaggio e delle sue vicende.
Tra l'altro mancano parecchi personaggi che hanno lasciato il segno, ergo, sono solo accennati en passant.
L'unica cosa proposta in tal senso - e sinceramente se la potevano anche risparmiare! - è la pedissequa ricostruzione, in termini di gioco e basandosi non so su quale resoconto - della famosa Sparatoria all'O.K. Corral che, sinceramente, lascia il tempo che trova.
In definitiva un volume abbastanza utile per ottenere un'infarinatura sulla storia del West e sulle caratteristiche dei suoi abitanti, in modo da poter evitare di prendere cantonate e limitarsi alla riproposizione in salsa ludica del classico "Spaghetti Western" ma questo è quanto.
