About Gabriel Orion Marie
My name is Gabriel Orion Marie, (Veronica C. Wanchena) and I am an author and artist. I have written and spoken to individuals and to groups in order share my personal story of being a woman who survived severe sexual abuse and incest during childhood. My desire is to share with others how I embarked upon an epic healing journey that saved my life and restored my sanity. This journey included an unexpected method of communicating and healing from the inexpressible by drawing and painting with an enlightened witness as my guide.
During the process of therapy I created over 325 paintings and drawings to assist me in getting the pain out and to communicate to my therapist what happened, how it hurt me and how deeply grieved I was.
It is my hope that my books and my artwork will bring hope, courage and insight to others who have suffered from the violence of others, and also that they will be a source of deeper understanding for those who are in the helping professions. In my art and my writing I have opened the doors of my most personal experience of wounding and also the door into the sacred arena of therapy where my healing emerged.
Several prints of my work are part of a larger traveling exhibit with the work of a few other artists in The Netherlands entitled "Strength from Brokenness". I also have donated a 7- piece exhibit entitled My Fire: The Alchemy of Abuse to The Awakenings Foundation Gallery in Chicago, Illinois. It is on permanent display there.
If you are interested in my paintings or prints of my work, or have other questions, you are welcome to contact me and I will respond in a timely manner.
With love and respect,
Gabriel Orion Marie

Gender Trauma is a phrase that came to me as I have thought about how to communicate my personal experience of deep pain and confusion that resulted from being sexually and emotionally tortured and brainwashed regarding my own body and gender. This book is about my healing from that specific trauma and the many attending issues around my sense of self that resulted from those traumas.
Since I published my trilogy several years ago, I have come even further along the road of healing, and I have moved into a deeper, more reflective perspective on the whole gender issue within me. The lens I am looking through now is not so much of an explicit, biographical, recounting of the abuse that I experienced. Rather, it is a progressive, retrospective understanding of how devastating, disabling, and painful Gender Trauma was for me, and how the gaping wounds that came from it affected every area of my life. Now, I also have an internal overview of how these wounds gradually healed through the inner work that I have done.
Note from the Author:
This book, A Spectacular Dawn, is the third in a series of books that I have written to share with you my personal story of intense suffering during childhood and how I embarked upon an epic healing journey. This journey included an unexpected method of communicating and healing from the inexpressible by drawing and painting with an enlightened witness as my guide.
There are many themes in the areas of wounding and healing from sexual abuse, incest, and torture, and for my books, I have chosen themes that were most prominent in my journey. I created over 325 paintings and drawings during several years of my therapy and have arranged selections of them by themes for chapters. I tried to choose paintings in each topic that I felt would communicate best what I am trying to share.
It is with great joy that I now share with you this part of the healing journey where the emergence and integration of Light—A Spectacular Dawn—has taken place. I have come to believe that this Dawn resides in each of us, no matter how broken we are, and that it quietly awaits our pursuit and discovery so it may lavish upon us its illuminating and liberating power.
These themes and paintings are divided into three books, the Recovery From Incest Through Painting My Story series:

Note from the Author:
In this second book of my series about my process of healing from incest through a therapeutic process that included painting my story, I am sharing with the readers some of the most heinous abuses and the resulting insanity that crippled and debilitated me profoundly. The experience of physical, emotional and sexual tortures drove me into a level of insanity and loss of perception of reality that permeated my daily life and required complicated and constantly shifting strategies for survival.
It was precisely because the intricate, graphic, heinous details of the abuse and the resulting insanities continued to imprison and torment me that I needed to purge all these details out. By painting and writing the details and bringing them into my therapeutic arena, I was finally healed of them, one by one. The shame I carried about needing to reveal the truth, the disturbing details, became the place where I had to exercise the most courage and in this alchemy of my soul and person, Shame has be changed into Courage. It is with this Courage that I offer you these volumes and I hope and pray that it may help you to exercise whatever Courage you need in your life to overcome what oppresses you.

In this potent little book, she articulates with great insight how her wounding damaged her, and the specific aspects of the therapeutic relationship that were most necessary for her full recovery. Her artwork in this book speaks as eloquently, simply and openly as her words.
